Hi all. As a beginner, I REALLY hesitated putting this on SMA, but I'm looking for all the constructive criticism I can get.

I've finished the initial brush paint job. I'm using Tamiya paints, and haven't quite got the hang of drying times, thinning the paint, etc. So, the figure does still need some touch-ups. I also believe I applied just a little too much black primer before painting - which buried some of the details on the figure.

The helmet and uniform are supposed to have a camouflage pattern, but that is too much for me right now. :)

Anywho.... I was going to apply my first weathering layer. Can I simply add the smallest amount of Black paint to water? The hobbyshop person I talked with recommended this as being a simple approach. (??)

Any advice is certainly appreciated!

Using Black will darken your figure considerably . You need to darken the base colour ....ie the green uniform add a drop of black to the green to make a shadow colour and paint that into the shadows ,creases etc , then using your green add some whitee to create the highlights and paint that onto the high spots ,same with the other colours ,you need to darken and lighten them seperately .
I dont recommend painting with Tamiya paints tho ,I would go for Vallejo ,far easier to work with ;)

I agree with Chris if you are going to use acrylics. But if you intend to use oils it is a blending concept vs layering. I personally use oils over an acrylic base, but go with what works best for you.

Cheers, Ski.
