This spring at AMPS Nationals in Indiana, I was lucky enough to spend the week with Miguel, Carlos, Iain and Rick of AK Interactive. On the Saturday of the show, in between much work, Miguel gave a seminar on painting and weathering and we had a camera running and captured the entire thing.

Here is a small section of that seminar, I hope some of the information in this quick video is useful.

WASH DEMO BY MIG JIMENEZ

It's interesting seeing him do it, I use a q tip for wiping off the wash and I also use enamel thinners instead of white spirits. I've found Ak white spirits has taken the base coat off (but to be honest that's probably down to me, if I used a brush softly like Mig and not a hard q tip that wouldn't have happened). Thanks for posting Ken.
2000th post ;D I need to get out more lol.

He does make it look easy but if you listen to him he even tells you that, in reality it kinda is. ;)

Often I see people ask about tide marks when using washes and how they struggle with them and as he points out in the video, it's merely just a matter of cleaning them up. He even handed the model off to a viewer to work on, just to show that anyone can do it.

My favorite aspect of the video is his humor though, if you've ever been in his presence you will know how down to earth, funny and pleasant he is. His joy and love for the hobby is infectious, and his willingness to talk and share his stuff with anyone who asks is incredible.

Thanks for posting, it was informative! I have been curious about the AK stuff.

LOL! What does that say about me: 5380 post! I must never see outdoors.....

I had read a few things that said Mig was hard to understand because of the language barrier, but I didn't find him hard to understand at all. Other than the "sh" sound rolling into a "ss" sound, bruss instead of brush, wass instead of wash, but otherwise was very clear, and concise, easy to understand on my end anyway.

I will admit, there were times when I thought he was channeling Chekov from Star Trek, but still easy to understand either way.

Yeah, that sound is actually more of a th sound, like that of a lisp ...it's just hard to pick up in the video.

He told us that the legend is that way back in history, the king of Spain had a lisp and ordered the language to be changed to suit the way he spoke, to avoid ridicule or that his court adopted it simply to please him. So in Spain it's Barthalona, where the Spanish speaking countries like Mexico, Dominican etc. don't have this sound.

;)

Thanks for posting this video. While this may seem like a comical question to you more experienced modelers, us inexperienced modelers don't understand. What is the purpose of the I believe its a wash for the blending effect ? It appears to me that all he did was brush the wash on in different lengths of lines and then use the stronger mineral spirits to erase the wash. I didn't see any benefit to that as in my opinion it didn't give the model any added graphics or color. What am I missing ?

Hi Ya Hooter!!!

The application is used to give the appearance of natural streaking. From what I am seeing in the video, Mig has a subtle approach to this. Not over doing let's say. He mentions on the video that you can add remove what you want and add more if you wish after each application. The amount of streaking that one applies is to one own liking. It was tough to see on the turret as he started blending the streaks and then the vid cut to the next shot. I hope these pics I borrowed from the clips help you see some of the effect a little better....

Very subtle. If you allow to dry and with a quick clear coat you can always add more if you like.

Seeing these last two pictures this effect is a bit more empirical. The natural streaking that occurs on all surffaces that are effected by the elements show nicely.

Hope this helped a bit... ;)

I think I see it. Its basically adding streaks to the tank as if in real life, water or liquids would run down the tank and leave a streak effect ? Very nice and seems like a simple procedure to acquire the streaks. Will jot this into my notebook for future reference :D Always learning something new everyday.

LOL...Thanks to Mig for the explanation....but your welcome for the still!! ;)

The streaks would be various types also...dust, dirt and grime as well as rainmarks and rusting. To do what Mig outlined and then add a chip or two with a light rust stain can bring something alive!!! ;D
