I finally bought my first military models. I've only built scale autos so far but want to try my hand at some military building sometime. So while I had the chance to pick up a couple of 1/72 aircraft for a good price , I grabbed them. At least I think they were a good price. What do you think? Both are pre owned and box opened but seem to be all intact. A Heller 1/72 Spitfire ($5.00) and a Italeri 1/72 Mustang ($10.00).

My other question is, where do you get some good reference material for real life weathered WWII aircraft?
I have found my searches on the web to be limited. When you do find a picture it is often old and not very clear. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

There are a lot of places to look, I use google a lot to find period photos. There are some websites that show some great pictures too, google "WWII in color" and "8th Airforce"

I hate to promote one website from another, but ARC is a great online aircraft modeling website. www.arcair.com . They have a huge gallery of aircraft models (in the thousands for sure) and a great forum also. I think you'll find many members from here are members at ARC aslo. many guys there are quite knowledgable in various subjects, if you dont find the answers you need there, you wont find them.

a couple of really good choices for first builds my friend. 8)
Can't wait to see them finished.

I'd like to add...if you havn't already...to go through each kit one at a time with the instructions and do a very thorough inventory of parts.Sometimes well meaning folks sell off old kits not knowing or forgetting that parts are broken/missing.And,trust me,you don't want to get all the way to the end of the build and realize that half of the wing or part of the landing gear wasn't in the box to begin with.Good luck!!

In regards to searches, besides doing a basic search for the planes and such; try doing searches like 'spitfire landing gear' or p-51 mustang cockpit or wing and such. i didn this recently and found a few good sites on the kit i was buidling (though i found them alittle late...)
Good luck!
