ok so i decided to do quick build of tamiya very old Panther "A" kit.

this was originally made back in 1969 so there are probably accuracy issues and details missing. bare in mind that this was also a toy and has slots in the lower hull for a mechanical motor but it was cheap at only £15.50.

i have thus far spent about another £10.00 on a replacement gun barrel and grills for the engine deck to the rear of the upper hull and spent time blocking off all o the open vision slots as well as filling the holes in the lower hull with plastic card.

i know what some of you are thining...."hey wait, you're a sci-fi guy why are you building armour...or why are you building that old kit when there are so many more detailed kits out there"

well its simple... i wanted to to a kit that would be a quick turn around and i also want to experiment doing a winter paint scheme as well as try out the "salt technique" for paint chips

A classic kit to work with for sure. Keep the pics coming, I've been wanting to try that kind of a finish too.

here you can see i have plugged the gaps and re-enforced the side walls of the lower hull.

after much sanding and washing i have left the lower hull to dry over night.

Yeah, great start. Cool to be trying out some new techniques as well.

My only advice is to make sure to have a nice variety of salt chips...some large, some medium, some very small. Some guys add baking soda to the mix too.

a brief update, as you can see the kit has now been assembled and primed ready for painting.

what i need to to know is what type of paint schemes were used on these early panther tanks.... did they have the dull grey colour that the early tigers had? not being a WW2 armour fan im not really too clued up on that...couple with the fact that it will then have to be given a white wash for a winter camouflage colour.

very nice so far...It's funny, you think ya, I'll finish in a few days and six months later it still isn't done..LOL Good luck...:)

These old kits can really help to do one thing--make yuo appreciate today's megnificently-engineered kits! I recenly built an old Italeri M110A2 and if nothing else it helped me appreciate how spoiled we are today in terms of fit and details!

Have fun with this--it will make you a better modeler in the end!

well she's just about done, a few minor issues to take care of. sorry for the crappy pictures, i'll get something sorted out soon when i get the chance.
