Hey fellow airplane modellers, I need help with something. I was recently given a vintage Airmodel kit of a FW 56. I want to paint it with the scheme shown but I'm unsure of the RLM colours. Any ideas?

I did do some more online google searching. First off the kit is from the 70's. Secondly the top view and the side view I show in my prevoius post are actually two different aircraft. Thirdly the splinter scheme shown in the top view is likely RLM 65 (under surfaces), RLM 70, RLM 71.

I spent about 15 minutes and started putting the fuselage together yesterday.

Hi Jason , Interesting project ,great looking little aircraft .

I will check my references ,but Im nearly sure the sides of the fuselage and the undersides were a light grey ? I will check ,but Im nearly sure ...I'll do some digging ;)

Chris.

Thanks Chris - That would be great. I partly based my colours off of this old Heller box top (from a Google search).

I'm mostly using the Fw 56 to tide me over until I have enough time (next week) to start into my Secret Santa Hanriot HD.1.

The Hanriot is a nice little kit ,I have that one :) ,I will check tomorrow for you Im headin to bed soon . I know most of them were originally Grey all over with a red band & swastika around the tail fin/ rudder and I think the camo was added to that . I think the grey was RLM 63 ??

Chris.

I've been picking away at this build, when I've had little bits of time this week. Below are a couple pictures of where it's at. As a break from the work I brought home this weekend, I started to prime everything this morning.

The pictures may look a little odd, the kit has no registration or locator for how parts fit together, I had to test fit and guess. In the end, I think some of the parts are a little off position but it'll do.

Hi Jason , I haven't forgot about checking the schemes for you ,just been busy this week ,I'll try and dig them out tomorrow. The build is looking good tho :)

Chris.

No problem Chris, it's a busy season. If you're too busy, or can't find it; I'll likely just modify my original idea of using an early war fighter scheme of RLM 65, RLM 70, RLM 71 to a combination of RLM 63, RLM 62, RLM 61. I will maybe try painting a test piece just to see how it looks.

Thanks Scott. I really like the Hanriot. :) I'm totally chopping at the bit to start it, i've just got to finish up a few things at work and home first. Besides I've got no bench to work at as of this afternoon, we are changing the room around, and getting rid of some of my furniture. The room and hallway is a total mess right now.

Great work! Cant believe your doing this with out locators for the parts!

Thanks Letsgobrowns82. Yep; not a location pin, hole or other feature on the whole thing.

I haven't had a chance to work on the Fw 56 at all this week. At work I'm finishing up our end of semester rush, and last weekend I gave up my old model bench/desk (as well as a big portion of the room). JMac Mancave (version 3.0) is not totally operational yet; still lots of stuff that needs to be put away, cleaned up, or tossed into the garbage before I can my resume building.

Actually regarding the Fw 56; another problem popped up with my planning/painting. If I don't hear otherwise, I will go back to my RLM 65, RLM 70, RLM 71 (or a slightly modified version there-of). I just don't have the RLM 62 & RLM 61 colours in my paint stocks... :p

Jason

JMac Mancave 3.0 is operational! ;D

I managed to get some paint on the Fw 56. Sorry Chris - I needed to paint something, and ended up going with my plan A paint scheme. Might be a little fictitious, but, that's ok. The main colours are all done. Next up I'm going to try and copy a move from CobraLeaders playbook and paint the German national markings. Then detail painting. ;D

Comments, suggestions and questions welcome. Thanks for following along.

J, how you manage to build all the 1/72 is beyond me. They all keep turning out incredable! Keep 'em coming!

Merry Christmas b.t.w.

Thanks Adam. Hope you had a great Christmas.

Ran into a couple problems:

1. My method for masking off the crosses didn't work so well. I'll have to either re-think it and try again or give in an purchase some after market decals.

2. When I removed the masks from the wings, the paint lifted right down to the plastic - the primer came loose. The plastic is very smooth, and feels kind of oily. I did wash the parts before painting, but...

I plan to strip the paint from the wings, really really wash 'em good, and paint again. I was hoping to have this done for the Edmonton IPMS meeting in January, guess not.

Work continues on the Fw-56; the wing has been repainted, decals on order, and most of the final assembly is done. Still have to finish up some paint touch-ups.

Thanks for stopping in and taking a look. Comments, questions, and suggestions always welcome.

Basically I proclaiming this one done.

Stole some decals from a set I had for a 1:72 scale early BF 109E-1, the rest were from my spares - so the markings are a wee bit fictional... but it's done. ;D.

I made a wind screen from a folder cover. The prop was not fixed in place from the pictures and still has to be trimmed a little bit shorter...

Thanks for taking a look. Comments always welcome.
