Hey guys,

As I am now getting comfortable with the weathering process I've been experimenting with chipping effects. I have done a little bit to my 88 and just recently came accross AK's Chipping Color. Have any of you guys used this product? Would this be a good product to use on modern vehicles with a base coat of AK 122 U.S. Modern Desert Tan?

Thanks,

Adam

It's 99.9% the same color a German camo brown from Vallejo so if u have that no need for the ak one, if u have neither get what will cost less,

As for will it do sure, But modern paint don't chip like the old German stuff

Spud, you haven't heard??? I'm made of money!!! Hahaha

Seriously though, I just spend over $200 bucks on the HET, I'm not affraid to spend some $$$ on the right paint product. So, from a non cost perspective, what do you guys think will be the best product to use for chipping modern armor?

Modern armor doesn't really chip. The paint is probably applied by Electrophoretic deposition and is a lot tougher than paint applied during WWII. If you really want to chip something get some WWII armor or if you really want to go crazy with chipping, a IJN plane.

Depending on where you shop, both Vallejo German Camo Black Brown (#822) and AK Interactives Chipping Color (#AK 711) are so similar in price I think it would only be the difference of saving a few more empty pop cans off the side of the road.

Of course, paint is mixable. So if you mix a dark grey/black with a dark red/brown, you could achieve something similar without any added cost

As far as modern armor not chipping, I have to disagree. Much of the modern armor being used today has been in the field ten years or even twenty in some cases, way longer than any WWII vehicle ever saw action.

Check out this photo of a modern Merkava, worn, dingy, rusty chips galore:

Any pictures of Abrams with chipped paint like that?

There is this pretty well known passed around image showing a really beat up M1 full of rust and wear:

I want to drop everything and build that now. Roll on Xmas with that Tusk in my stocking ;D

I know from seeing first hand that some AFVs can show rust and wear within 1 year of being in the field.....it only really takes one exposure to moisture to start the process. OIF/OEF vehicles are actually prone to it due to the punishing sand and heat exposure followed by a washing by the unit or by weather. Sadl enough, some of these things get TERRIBAD while on transport back to the states. Mind you, most of all the rusting you see if topical and just surface. The working hinges and moving parts are what really show the most corrosion.....Down at NAS Jax I saw a M-ATV on return flight and it looked like the doors were held on with thread :)

I blame the vast environment change from desert to Florida humidity

Info from Scratchmod on another forum:

"The AK chipping is slightly darker and thinner than the Valejo camo brown. Also, only the first couple of CM sets were produced by Vallejo. Since then they are NOT made by Vallejo. So this means this acrylics from the past year or so including the rust set and the chipping color are not Vallejo, similar yes but not Vallejo.
If the color is too dark you can lighten it, which I do on occasion"

Thanks again Rob (I hope you don't mind me posting that info here)

Ken, thanks as well for posting that info about the AK chipping Color. (Spud I'm doing it just to spite you!!! :p :p)

i done a comparison of both colors side by side a while back and its so minimal that you will never tell the difference between them for chipping.

but its really up to you at the end of the day what you prefer :) if you have plans to get the AK rust set get that as it comes in the set. :)

Asides the fact that modern armor does chip (most of them being painted with an ordinary spray gun ) check out some with the paint flaking off ! , like tanks that served in Kosovo then got repainted to desert camo , the paint is just falling of some of them . ;)

Chris.

A first coating from the factory is typically an epoxy 2 part high solid paint....it's like making a hard candy shell on the AFV. We use a similar coating on subs and naval ships. I sourced it in one of the huge paint manuals we have in the paint trailers on the drydock
