Dullcoating with a handbrush

I hate using spray cans or airbrushes (I find them all a nuisance) so I do all my work by handbrush. But when I try to do a dullcoat over a glosscoat (after applying decals) I find the results very patchy and the gloss coat is never "de-glossed" no matter how many dullcoats I put over it. I have used Acryl flat clear and Tamiya flat clear and the results are about the same (I like to stick to acrylics). I have tried thinning the dullcoat quite a bit, and while this makes it go on more smoothly and easily, I still end up with a kind of semi-gloss shine. What should I do?

I believe the problem you are haveing is caused by the thickness of the dull coat your applying. When dull coat is brushed the mill thickness is quite a bit thicker then when it is sprayed. I would stay with an acrylic if your dead set on brushing it on to aply it, but I don't know what to tell you to do to help your situation. I have applied Testors flat clear acrylic clear with a brush with good results. But.....I can see brush marks over the decals at certain angles and it is still more of a low semigloss than dead flat. I would say its 80/20 at best. 80% flat 20% gloss. Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the response. I think I was thinning it with about 20 or 30% thinner. I may try to make it even more diluted than that and perhaps try applying thinner, more numerous coats.
