Moldy Palette!

What's a wet palette? I just use a cheap Walmart plastic one, can you soak it in bleach?

Just take the sponge out and wash it with some cleaner, something a little stronger than just dishsoap. Something like simple green or Fantastic...something that will kill the mold. Hot, hot water as well.

Must have been something in the sponge to cause the mold to grow....but could have been just a mold spore(s) that got trapped under the paper.

Wet pallet is used to keep your paint moist. If you custom mix a color for something, it is always good to keep it on a wet pallet, that way if you have to do touch ups, or need the same color at a later time, you have it, instead of having to try and mix the same shade again. Just makes like much more simpler!

I like it because you can store your mix without having to try and decanter it into a little jar or something. As well, those details on models take up so little paint, it's usually not worth the effort or the mess. With a wet palette, you get the best of both worlds: custom mixed paint with pretty much no mess or trouble to store it for later use if needed.
I had the paint stored at room temperature for about 2 weeks, and while a little thicker, it was still definitely useable for a touch-up (just add a little water and mix it around to desired consistency). I hear that if you refrigerate it, you can stretch that storage time even further.
You can pick one up at an art store for $20 or less, and they usually come with palette paper to lay over the sponge. When that runs out, use parchment baking paper from the baking section of your grocery store. It comes on rolls like wax paper or aluminum foil. Just keep the big sponge underneath moist with water, and mix your acrylic paint right on the paper. They always come with a big sealable cover to keep the moisture from evaporating away.

And if it gets moldy... well, we'll see what happens then. I think I have some mold and mildew remover in my cleaner cupboard, but i'm a little nervous about the chemicals in the cleaner ruining the sponge for acrylic painting.

I thought about this last night.....clean your sponge out in the sink....wring most of the water out of it...and then stick it in the microwave for 30-45 secs.

The waves in the microwave should kill any organism that would be living in the sponge I would think.

I soaked it overnight in the sink with some mold/mildew killer, and sprayed down the palette and lid as well. Directions say to leave it dry overnight. I think I'll let the sponge soak for most of the day today as well, then into the microwave! Thanks for the tip, Scott!
