Hey guys. Ive came across the opportunity to purchase a bulk unit of Nascar kits from the 80s and 90s. The guy has 50 AMT and Monogram various assortment of Nascar kits. He told me to make him a offer. I was wondering if you guys were selling or buying a lot of 50 kits such as these what you feel would be a honest offer ? Let me know asap as Id like to secure this buy asap. Thanks and much appreciated.

From a perspective of myself with a hobby shop, if I was buying them to resell them as a used kit, I would probably offer $5 each, with the intentions of selling them for $10 each.

That being said, there may be a few rare ones in there that might be worth slightly more, but even the so called "limited edition" kits that Revell put out, they still produced 15000 plus kits, which doesn't make the kit all that rare. 1000-2000 kits is what I would consider rare, 15000+ kits is a normal run (at least back then).

From a personal perspective....honestly I probably wouldn't go much over $7.50 to $10.00 per kit. Most can be found on Ebay at around $10, with the exception of a few. Offer him $500 for the lot and see what he says.

I would want to have a look at what he has, check all the boxes to make sure all the parts are there, and the decals are still good. If the decals are trashed, then no more than $5 for a kit with trashed decals.

Also take into account how many (if any) have been started. Bottom line, if all the kits are perfect, would say now more than $700 for the lot.

All 50 are shrink wrapped new in the boxes. He has mailed me a list of the exact inventory Im waiting to receive in the mail. There are duplicates of several which is no problem because Ill just purchase decals of the same chassis of a different driver so when I get the listing of the exact kits he has Ill let ya know and we can talk more then. Im expecting to have the listing either tomorrow or Monday at the latest. HE sent me the email saying he sent me a list of the inventory he has two days ago but I was unable to get to the post office till tomorrow. So Ill be in touch for sure. Im glad you said that though becuase I was thinking 5-7 a kit. Thats what I get them on ebay for its the shipping that kills me though and restricts what I buy from ebay. This guy is local to me so I would be picking them up at his house. So that kills the shipping costs which enables me to pay a bit more per kit. I may offer to buy the bulk lot but in installments. So many this month, so many next month etc. He has had them since they were new starting in the 80s and had them ever since so hes in no hurry to offer them to anyone else. He knew I got into the hobby is friends with my father and offered them to me. Hes more into strictly scratch building now which is why he wants to sell the kits. He actually has a buddy in Reading, PA that makes Resin bodys for some for coupes he was telling me about the other day when I talked to him so Im anxious to see what the name of the guy is and check out his website. He told me hes so busy he cant keep up with the orders for his resin bodies.

Just be wary, even though they are still sealed, the decals can still be fubar depending on where they were stored, have seen that many times with older still sealed kits.

How dependable is the Liquid Decal Film from Microscale ? I also heard of taping yellowed decals to the window allowing the sun to bleach them ? Is that a guaranteed fix or is it a hit and miss ?

Im not opposed to buying a kit with bad decals. I can always buy aftermarket decals from per say Slixx or Mikes Decals etc. Its the kits parts that I'm after.

If the decals are just yellowed, then yeah you can tape them to a window and let the sun bleach out the yellow, that is minor, I am talking about humidity. No amount of fixing will bring a set of decals that have been in a humid environment back to life, and even if the kits are factory sealed, humidity can still ruin them.

Sure you can buy aftermarket decals (although Slixx haven't done Nascar decals for years, there are still some floating around), but that just adds to the cost of each kit (ie: now spending more than the $5-$7 per kit).

That being said, since the kits are all sealed and you can't really look in them, you take your chances with how the decals fared over time, which is why I suggested offering him $500 for the lot to see if he would let them go for that amount.

Have to keep in mind, I look at this from a business perspective, and not from a personal perspective. If I paid $5 a kit, even for sealed ones and the decals were all crap, then they probably aren't even worth what I paid for them as it would cost more to get new decals than what the kit cost me in the first place.

Scott, Im ending up getting all 51 of these Nascar Kits which are all AMT or Monogram from the 80-90s for $300. I asked the guy if he had a idea of what he wanted to get for the kits and told him I knew what I would have to pay on ebay for the kits. He told me he resigned the idea of getting what he has into them and just wants to get something out of them because he gave up building kits as he now does everything from scratch and does all racing coupes. He told me he would like to get $6 / kit and said how bout an even $300 for all 51 kits. I said SOLD. Will be getting them either beginning of Feb or March. Maybe half in Feb half in March. So stoaked. I will be building Nascar kits till 2017 ha ha if not 2020 :D Should keep me busy for a while.
