I find the scale makes it really hard to get that 'perfect' balance. My tendency is to go the other way, with not enough contrast. I get fooled by the lighting at my bench, which casts its own shadows, so I go too soft.

Maybe an intermediate shadow, or working it wet with an extender to allow for some blending as you go?
