Now that my Me 262 is basically done I thought I would start on this kit. It has been moulded from an older mould, raised panel lines and what looks like big gaps from my initial test fits. I'm planning this to be mostly as an airbrush practice kit, (I have the same plane in Tamiyas 1:48 kit and done want to screw that up). I'm not planning to re-scribe the panel lines. I'm going to build it gear up and flying, I've got an idea for the stand.

Cool bird !

Night fighters are my Fav.... Bought this one twice in 48th *Tamiya* and sold them both... DUH !

Wicked looking machine.... way advance... Slick German Killing machine.... at its best !

Lucky for us they didn't have many of them.....

Later !

Looks to be cool!

Now I heard something about an idea for a stand? You've really got my interest now!

Thanks guys. I really think it's a cool looking plane also. I think I'd like to try one of the Dragon He 219 kits some time.

Have to agree with you Norm, if someone is looking at night fighters you can choose from some really interesting subjects. Lots of subjects kitted out there also, especially if you select German aircraft. I'm hoping to really pour lots of love in to my 1:48 scale Tamiya He 219 when I get the chance.

I've started to put the major assemblies together. The fit is very rough with gaps on many of the joints. So far I've shimmed gaps with polystyrene sheet as I come across them, still have a lot more to close up. After shimming a section, I began to putty as I went.

The main mate between the wing and the fuselage seemed like it would not offer a strong joint, so I reinforced it with a section of aluminum tube the fits inside the wing leading edge and acts as a spar.

I'll be shimming, filling, and sanding for some time. after that I'm going to try and restore the raised panel lines that have been removed.

I was thinking I might try my hand at scratch building some cockpit details. The kit come with two seats and two blob shaped pilots and thats it.

Thanks for looking. Comments welcome.

JMac..., you are not messing around!
Can't wait to see the progress on this. You're doing up these German birds proper.

Wow... That was some major "Clamp-age"..... You had to do on her! LOL

Good idea for the reinforcement for the wing.

I've been working a little on the He 219. I'm taking a small break from gap shimming and filling right now. I decided that the gun ports needed to be improved, I've drilled them out and inserted them with aluminum tubing that has been super glued in place. I'll try to file them off and blend them in to the existing fuselage later. So far I've finished the underside belly cannon pack and the top fuselage mounted "shrange musik" cannons. It's the first time that I'm trying this kind of surgery - I really hope it turns out.

The next thing I started was scratch building a cockpit; it's very rough right now and I'm not sure I've taken the right approach yet. The existing kit cockpit sucks, it consists of two featureless chairs. I'll see what I can come up with I have lots of sheet polystyrene here at home...

Now, if I'm going to make a nice front office, I need to do something about the pilot and radar operator. The kit supplied ones look gross & have very little detail. So I went out and bought a Revell 1:72 German pilot and aircrew figure set. The new figures look not bad and I'll have a number of spares for other projects. :)

Yep Myke, I've been sanding. In fact today I was over zealous with my sanding and had to break out the ol' squadron green putty.

Quick update;

I've been sanding down the cannon ports, they look not too bad now. Still have some fine work to be done

Also I've been trying to scratch build a cockpit tub. It's taken three tries, the first one (at the bottom of the picture) was too flimsy and large, the second (middle) had some fit issues with the pilot, third times the charm however (fit into the fuselage). :D I'm really enjoying this although I can't give it alot of attention every day...

Ideas, comments, anecdotes and criticisms welcome. ;D

what sort of Camo will you apply ? Black underbelly ? squiggly scheme ???

let us know !

Take care and hope you find time to work on her.... she looks like a lot of fun !

Norm.

Looks like you're definitely getting there.
Scratchbuilding something like this is never easy

Thanks for checking in on my progress guys, I appreciate it.

@Norm, I'm not sure the kit has two marking options, one is a blue/grey belly, with what looks like leopard spots on the top. The other has the same spots on top with a black belly. My airbrush chops have really improved, but I'm not so sure i can do a squiggly top camo pattern yet. They are pretty cool looking however.

@C.P.O. yeah, I seen some articles on the net that it's an old matchbox kit, some guys say it's an old frog kit, maybe it's both...

@ Q, the scratch building is something that I have always wanted to try, but I was not that confident that it would work out. Now I'm just being cheap, but still want to add a little visual interest to the kit, so scratching it is. It's actually pretty fun, I've had to built a few items more than once, but I'm learning...

Any ways, I'm going to be out of the city, camping with my kids next week. No modeling on the 219 till I get back. The trip should be good, looking forward to it, the only thing is I think I might miss the contest final entry posts.

JMac.
