I always wanted to build the USAF version of the A-1H Skyraider and I was able to pick one up at AtlantaCon years back. Most of the raised panel lines were already sanded off so that made things somewhat easier. I did run into an issue in regards to the Medium Green. it seems Vallejo's version of Medium Green is very close to their US Dark Green so it took some tweaking to make it work.

Great build. Pantherman

Nice!

This is why I hoarded all the SEA colors I could get my hands on when Model Master was discontinued. They are spot on. I have enough to last the rest of my life I think. LOL

She's a beauty.

I think I built that kit, or a Revellogram equivalent in the 70s, mine turned out ummm...nothing like this.

The A-1H was one amazing machine, and consider this was a ICE/Prop plane designed after the Mustangs and Corsairs were retired!

It was designed before they were retired. It entered the inventory in 1946. So all the stuff from WWII was still in service. Not to mention the Mustangs were flying in the Korean war at the beginning. Which actually speaks to your point even more. LOL

Great looking build! I appreciate the weathered "used" look.
Concerning the discussion on the SEA colors, what advice can you give on correct color numbers using acrylic paints? On my F-105 I went with all Tamiya paints: XF-19 Sky Grey undersides, XF-52 Flat Earth, XF-5 Flat Green and XF-11 JN Green. I know these are not EXACT but were able to please my friends for gifts. I'd like to be more accurate on the Skyraider I'm building for my own collection.
Any input would be welcome.
Also, I noticed that Skyraiders operating out of Nakon Phanom in 1970 had changed from grey undersides to black, which interests me. I had a T-28 RC plane painted that way and it drew attention.

Vallejo acrylics appear close to SEA "standards" if you can use such a word in this case. Paint "shading" (the industry term for matching a batch of paint to a color specification) is half science, half art, and still dependent on the human eye. So if it looks right, it probably is. One consideration: match colors using the light under which the model will be displayed. This can make a huge difference with some colors.

And yes, I once did this for a living.

Thanks for the input, I'll try a couple Vallejo colors. "Eye of the beholder" plays a part in this as well. While I might not get it "exact" (whatever that means) it still should be a labor of love for modeling and pleasing to me. I am not going to be competing, just enjoying. I've seen many of the planes in real life on ramps (in service), in collections, in museums and at events, and they are all a bit different in color and tone. I tend to like my planes a bit dirty so I'll go with sharpening those techniques. Again thanks for everyone's conversations, this is enhancing my modeling.
