scratch uild ED-209

hello everyone i fancy having a crack at scratch building materials are not a problem but general information on what i want to do is. ive decided to try and scratch build ed-209 from robocop.
id like to make it about 3 or 4 ft tall with an ir sensor in the front a large speaker with recorded sound and motors in the arms and legs.
so when switched on and someone walks past it stands upright the arms move into position and the head moves to the side then the sounds kick in u no (please put down your weapon you have 20 sec to comply etc etc.
any information on wiring, scratch building techniques ,motors ,gears would b appreciated

This si the type of info I would like to find out as well.
Although I am not building anything so large, but I have alos wanted to know about motorization and definitely lighting!
