I just finished a Tamiya Char B1 bis kit that included some string to use for the towing cables.

At first I wasn't too keen on using string for the towing cables, but after painting and weathering the kit I thought it didn't look too bad. There was no fraying and it really does sort of look like cable.

Does anyone know what type of string this is?? Nylon?? Cotton?? Silk?? Or...?? And where can this type of string be obtained in a spool?? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You know what I'd do? I'd send an email to customer service at Tamiya. Worth a try. Worst case scenario: it's a state secret ::)

Best case: they offer to sell you a few km spool ;D

It does look spot on!

My daughter was into jewelery making. She had tons of spools of wire, and string. Maybe we can look there and see if somethings close to this.

Could you post am image of that along a ruler to get a better idea of scale and weave?

Yes, the string that comes in some Tamiya and AFV Club kits is nylon.

You should be able to buy it at craft stores or online, you just need to measure it's thickness to make sure and get something similar.

Here is a photo of the string with a ruler.

Yes, if we can nail down some technical specifics then hopefully it may be easier to track down some bulk supply.

I just did a little searching around on eBay and found a lot of third party cables by Eureka and SKB. They look like they're made of metal cable and seem to be shooting for high accuracy with regards to cable twist and the type of hooks used for a specific vehicle. The price doesn't seem so bad and they look nice. Has anyone ever used these??

Ken nailed it, it's nylon. I picked up a spool of it at a crafting supply outlet called Michael's, but I also found some at a sewing supply store called Fabricland.
