O.K, O.K, I know I have another thread running that I was going to use to post this, but I felt I was getting really disorganized with all kinds of builds running around in one thread. (A mistake I made on another forum ;D) The P-51D will have to wait (for a while), as this has top priority. (At least until another model tugs at my attention ::))

Anyways, I received in the mail yesterday - the pre-printed Modelart F-15C and E. On a related note, earlier this week I received some more paper model packages from the UK.

Again, the model can be found here - http://www.papermodels.co.il/

I could say endless things about the model, but the information can be found on Modelart's homepage. One thing that I must say is that the pre-printed version is most certainly one of the best print quality jobs I've ever seen. Problem? Well, one mess up and the model is kaput! So accuracy and precision, two of my worst enemies, must be exercised throughout the build.

Will post video logs on this tonight o tomorrow! I'll also review the Pre-printed versions of the F-15's as well as the packages I received from the UK. :)

Good to know you're here Grendels! Hope this one is interesting!

Good to know you're here too Mademodeller! If I'm reading this right, you build paper models as well? Cool! Any pictures of your work? I'd love to see them!

You guys sure like to Live Hard !

afer all there are tons of great styrene models out there..... but you chose to Build Paper Models....

WICKED skills !!! I am not putting it down... on the contrary !!! it is an OLDER way to get those Obscure war machines..... and with the advent of Computer Aided Design.... Those models are even more precise...

I am at a lost why ??? thou you would go that way !!! seriously !

but at the same time I am Jealous of your talent and dedication to such Medium....

Keep it up and I want to follow this.... cuz.. its so OUT THERE>... I need to see what comes out of it..

Later guys....

and good luck with those... Awesome projects....

Norm...

OUT !

Mademodeller: Thanks for the videos! I will definitely be watching/hearing them while I build. Also, you sir are an excellent paper modeler! I would call myself a beginner, so I hope you don't mind me asking questions of you when I get stuck ;)

Quaralane: Definitely :D There's over 1700 pieces!

Norm: Actually, on the paper modeling forum I'm on, I believe someone joked that this hobby was a means of masochism (not in the sexual way of course).

Styrene...styrene...oh yeah! Different paper modelers have different reasons, but I'll give you my personal one. Truth be told, I dislike "assembling" pre-molded pieces. Now don't take that the wrong way! I love such models and really appreciate every plastic and styrene (and other mediums) models, but it's not my modus operandi. When I model something, I want to say I built it, in the sense that I REALLY did build it! I start out with literally nothing, and end up with something (Hopefully). It makes modeling, for me, more satisfying.

Truth be told, I also enjoy it because it's difficult and extremely challenging for me! I don't want to toot my horn, but I'm pretty intelligent :p and I usually pick up things and excel quickly. (No bragging intended).

But when I started paper modeling, it was like, BOOM, BRICK WALL. I have to build EACH piece? From a flat sheet? WHAT? That was my initial reaction, and since then, I still haven't grasped the level I want to be at. I log on to the paper modeling forums I'm on, and am constantly (on a daily basis) blasted away by the attention to forming each piece delicately.

You are correct, there are a ton of great styrene models out there! I appreciate, again, everything that goes into modeling with such mediums. I don't discriminate any modeling medium, as I'm fascinated by them all! However, I believe if I picked plastic and styrene modeling, and possessed the desire to improve, I could probably grasp the level I would want in about 1-2 years. (Please don't take this as sounding cocky, as I know all modeling takes many years to master.)

You are correct again! It is an older form of modeling! I mean, look at the old Maly Modelarz kits ;D Precise, precise... yes, precise is a great feat! However, there's this feeling one gets when one builds a model from nothing. To make a connection, sort of like scratchbuilding in styrene or plastic. The differences of course are the mediums, but even more so - If you mess up on a paper model, there's no good way to cover it up! Putty? Nope! Paint? Unless its the edges I haven't seen anyone hide mistakes so well! Of course you can reprint, but it adds a sort of critical factor, and that BUILDING MUST BE PRECISE. (Of course modeling in other mediums have the need to express preciseness, however, paper is not forgiving! ;D)

Computer aided design? Oh of course! Did I forget to mention that there's the designer too? ;D Build and model it in CAD and then build it in reality! I've partially done it before, and it really opens up a new perspective. I now have a lot of respect to the designers of plastic/styrene publishers, because of course, it usually starts off in CAD.

Sorry for the long winded post, will have pictures/ video logs later!

Awesome Fruit - my favorite plane. Now get to building so I can see some photos! ;-)

Glad to hear from you Myke! You got it, I realize I get carried away with typing posts and usually make them long ::)

Anyways, please forgive the lame quality photo, (Hopefully it doesn't give anyone a headache). This is just to show you guys I'm building it - and will have better photos and perhaps, a video log.

Keep 'em coming Fruit.

I hope you document your build and keep the thread here as a kind of step by step thread. I know I'm amazed that you're building a 1700 pc model out of paper (and some of the images you've posted, I'd had no idea as to the level of detail on a paper model) - really that's dedication. I'm also really interested on the process and see the similarities and differences of modelling with paper vs. styrene.

Looking forward to following your progress.

JMac

I'm with JMac. Really want to see one of these start to finish. Selfishly I realize.

WOW Fruit..., you got some work ahead of you buddy!
That video satisfied a lot of my curiosities, thanks for posting. That metallic printing does show through in the video, amazing they reproduce that. I like the sheet with the drop tanks, that looks like quiet the challenge.

Good luck. I'll be following along.

Definitely a lot of work! But I'll log every step of the way.
Glad to hear that - however, I'm curious as to why I wasn't able to use the full potential quality my camera has. (Anyone know how to upload videos at 720p?)

The metallic printing is difficult to keep clean from thumbprints and such though - much more sensitive than the regular model pieces.

Glad to have you here!

Will have build log #1 up today and pictures for those incapable of playing videos.

If you're uploading to Youtube, they should go up in HD automatically, nothing special to make it happen.
The viewer just defaults to 360p.
You get the full HD if you view it full screen

Looking forward to seeing the build log

Great overview of the kit Fruit. Man you must have king sized patience... ;D

Still can't get over 1729 parts. And it's huge! What is the cost on a kit like that?

JMac

Quaralane: Alrighty, thanks for the info!

Jmac: Thanks, though the video doesn't do the kit justice and I'm debating doing a retake so the detail can be better seen.

Ace: Thanks buddy! I appreciate it!

I don't know about king sized patience... ::)

Yeah, the 1729 parts is an insane number count - but there's a bunch more models at a higher piece count. When one gets up into the higher quality kits, like Halinski, (picture of Halinski kits below), parts count become just a number. (Take Halinski's T-34 for example, over 7000 parts  and I'm pretty sure their Sherman Firefly has even more than that).

Cost isn't steep, in fact, I guess you could call it a steal! ;D It cost me $27 exactly, and that includes shipping/handling. I forgot to mention that paper models are cheaper than most plastic models. To give you an idea, the usual top end paper model kit is anywhere from $10-30 or up and other publishing companies less. Digitally formatted kits are even cheaper and of course can be built many, many times, but the cost of ink and paper sort of go with that package.

Halinski (Top of the line publisher, the "Tamiya" equivalent in paper modeling.)

WAK (I want to call them new to the publishing stuff, but I'm probably wrong. Really promising models though!)

Modelik (These are good kits too, and the great part is their new kits look like they're approaching "near to Halinski" quality.

In all, the grand total for these 17 kits cost me a little over $100 - and that included shipping too! Scales on these go - 1:200 for the ships (HUGE), 1:33 for the aircraft (HUGE), 1:25 for armor (HUGE). The published kits tend to have (HUGE) scales, but these are very common card scales.

In F-15 news, I experienced a rather splitting headache for a good part of the day, so no real progress and nothing to really log about. Tomorrow for sure though!
