Are you using Bare Metal Foil for your chrome trim?

yup the original chrome bmf. also a little trick to enhance the final look is to paint all the inside edges of the trim black. that way it looks more to scale thickness wise.

glad you can notice! lol. I just take black oil paint right from the tube and brush it over the whole wheel. then wipe it off and blend out the bits around any joints. gotta be careful though if you rub on the chrome plating to much it will wear off.
just practice on old wheels. its way more effective than a simple thinned down wash cause you have total control of the look
oh and I mount the wheels on the rims first.
