A second helping of SPAD - Complete

Re: A second helping of SPAD

Thanks Gary, really the appreciate comments,

Really they just require patience, and at the speed I build, I got plenty of that. This is only my second bi-plane and I'm loving it, I bought an number of other kits and they are waiting in the wings. I'm hooked, lots of fun.

Re: A second helping of SPAD

Well it's been a while, but I have the top wing on, the decals done and sealed, and the rigging complete. I thought everything was going great, I was threading the rigging through holes in the struts and securing the rigging with drops of CA. After I had finished I found out that somehow I got three drops of CA on the top surface of the top wing. It was already hardened. I tried to remove it carefully with a very sharp new #11 blade only to chip & scar the surrounding paint. I had to mix up a new batch of paint and tried to touch up the area, first time with a brush, and second time with an airbrush. Both times the problem is that the new paint is blatantly obvious (even though I used the same recipe as the other two matching batches I did). The way I see it I have two possible directions I could go with this one;

1. Mask-off the decals and repaint the wing top – yucky
2. Leave it, and try to use so weathering to blend the two shades together – also yucky.

If anyone has a possible fix that will not require re-decaling, I'd love to hear it. Out side of my latest setback, I'm pretty happy with how this has turned out...next bi-plane will be better

Re: A second helping of SPAD

I've been away from modelling for the past month, but finally managed to weather / finish up this build. I've got a couple pictures in "Whatcha' Built". In the end I tried to mask off the top wing and redo the paint, but the mask was not that successful. Live and learn. So I just left the slightly blotchy part...
Did try an artist oil and mineral spirit wash for the first time - I think it went ok. For my second biplane, and my first real attempt at scratching / correcting some minor details, I'm happy with it. The next biplane will go better... ;D
