AMT 1/48 Grumman F7F-3 Tigercat

Going on the bench is the F7F Tigercat. This has been calling my name for a while now so I thought I would built it.

I actually really like the look of this plane. Sleek and fast

I will admit it looks better in the photos than in the box art Certainly sleeker than the painting has it. Still can't say I'm fond of how it looks, but it's not as bad as the initial impression.

The TigerCat was ahead of it's time and I seldom see those being built. Looking forward to watching this one, please keep us updated Tim!

Guess that was not the best term to use, it was at the beginning of the jet age and all, so hardly "ahead". But the performance was stunning compared to ICE/prop planes of it's time.

It was a great plane but bad timing.

I got the fuselage together. AMT has absolutely no detail on this cockpit.

A bit more progress made on this.
I got the landing gear and wings mounted.
Still trying to figure out the color. It calls for sea blue but Tamiya sea blue is almost charcoal. See fuselage

That's a bummer about the lack of detail in the pit but what you've got done so far looks pretty dang good considering that this is an AMT aircraft kit. Looking forward to seeing more Tim.

Tamiya's USN blue is definitely too dark, I mixed some lighter blue with it (about 40% XF-8 and 40% XF-17 with about 20% XF-18) for my Corsair and I think the result was improved. Here's a picture from earlier this year, the lighting is very bright (LED) which lightens the appearance considerably over normal light.



This other picture (without the LEDs) shows it is still fairly dark, but not midnight like out of the bottle.

Base coat is done. I decided to stay with the Tamiya Sea Blue.

I thought I would do something a little different with the paint job. What do you think?

That is an interesting camo job Tim. Is it patterned after a specific aircraft or is this a "what if" camo?
In either case, this is coming along well bud.

No specific pattern. I just loaded paint in the AB and started spraying. I didn't like the one color for this aircraft even though every picture I looked at is one color.

Sometimes it's like that. I've seen several "what if" builds and it's good to take an artistic license sometimes in the hobby. This is one reason that Luft '46 builds appeal to me. One can get dang near as crazy as they want to with those.
