What's up everyone. I am 32 years old and decided to start a new hobby and see how I like it. I want to build scale model cars or engine. I like old classic cars and working on my car when I can. I have been researching an looking for the right model to start with. My problem is that I want to start with a model that has great detail, moving suspension and all the goodies. I never built a model before and the research says to start with a simple cheap model. I guess that would be best, but not what I want to do. Anyway I will be researching and posting as I go.
Thanks

Sergio

Hello and Welcome!

I agree with what your research has found, start simple and work your way up.

Yes, I will guy. I am so amazed at the work and detail into these masterpieces you guys have completed. Wow, these weathered models, WOW!!! Can't wait until I can venture on completing a weathered rusty old bucket.

Question. How long does in take one to complete a model once you are experienced? Approximately working a little everyday or on weekends.

Thanks guys.

Welcome from PA my fellow neighbor. Hope you werent effected by Hurricane Sandy and pray for anyone around or near you that may have been.

hello and welcome it veries for me with time it can take a weekend if I don't do to much or in the case of my 1/350 hood months so far but that is because I want it perfect to desplay as a memorial to my uncle.

Thank you. Luckily I only suffered with no electricity for a week. I feel for the people that lost everything, unbelievable what occurred down the shore.

Welcome to the Herd!!! I have only seriously been doing this for about a year, dabled here and there at different times earlier in life. In terms of time spent on models, it varries a lot from model to model. What I have found, is that even being a year into this, I'm still a newbie. I have found more times than not, the more detail I try to put into a kit the more frustrating the build can become. I would strongly suggest getting a few simple builds under your belt where you can practice the basics. Once you feel comfortable you can then move on to a more complicated build. Either way, you will find everybody on SMA amazingly helpful!

Thanks all for the warm welcome. I am sure I will be posting lots of questions and asking for advice. I have been browsing the builds to see the work and trying to get ideas for my first build. It will probably be a first generation camaro, I think. I'm going to keep browsing and see what gets my attention.

Welcome to SMA! Starting with a cheap model is good, but make sure it is a subject you like. I can't think of any car kits that come with moving suspension parts and all that, with the exception of the 1/16 or larger scale stuff or possibly some racing cars. The time it takes to build a model varies so much. Most of the time the model is sitting in the box waiting to be worked on or watching paint dry. ;D I build here and there for a half hour or maybe a couple hours at a time off and on for many days and eventually finish them. No rush really.

Thanks guys. I think patience will have to be one of the major thing I will be working on. I want to complete a weathered project, but have no experience and skill development. I just see these pieces and want to be able to produce similar projects, but know it's not possible. I will begin small and try to develops skills and patience.

Anyone can give me advice on tools or things to buy when I go to the hobby shop. Don't want the guy to sell me things I don't need. I also want to pick up air brush kit. Never used one, but they come in handy for other things I'm sure. I will be looking for a used one first so need to start looking as soon as possible. Because that may take a while. Please guys, give me your tips and suggestions of what to buy to be prepared.

Thanks.
