Noob questions about Future

I'm getting back into modeling after about 22 years absent.
I've been watching and reading tons about using Future as a clearcoat to prepare the model for washes and decals.
I experimented the other day with it; scored some lines in a scrap piece of styrene. Brushed over half the scores marks with a coat of future, left the other half untouched. Once it dried overnight, I applied a pastel pinwash to the score marks. When I dabbed the brush to the Future side, nothing happened. The wash did not flow anywhere. When I dabbed the uncoated side, the flowed perfectly into all the score marks.

I don't know what went wrong with the glosscoat. If anyone has any insights or possible solutions I'd much appreciate reading them!

The future you brushed over the score lines would have filled in the lines, which is why your wash didn't flow into the lines.

Future works great as a gloss coat, but generally goes on too thick when brushed on, and can fill in detail.

Airbrushing on thin layers gives you the same result, but doesn't fill in detail (unless you really flood it on).
