Noob's lit Viper Mk. II

And now I've done a layer of white (tamiya flat white). It's a bit uneven due to some (now solved) problems with my airbrush. I also realised that there were still some light leaks from various seams in the fuselage. I wanted to sort that out but didn't want to go back to using reveal plasto putty over the top of the paint layer so i used some white acrylic paint from a tube (really thick stuff) to plug those gaps instead.

I think it's worked really well. Once i applied it and filled the gaps, i used a wet brush to remove the excess and smooth it out. I'll have to give it another coat of tamiya white to hide it (the tube paint is a slightly different shade of white) but i was gonna do that anyway.

The paint-as-filler trick seems to have worked. I've included some pictures of it. Hmm. Guess I'll have to see what happens when it's all dry.

Btw, does anyone have any tips for getting a really smooth layer of paint? Mine seems to come out very slightly grainy. I've got some klear/multi-surface wax - would that smooth things out if i gave the model a coat of it?

Thanks all!

Hi all,

Had to take a long break to get some work done but I've made slow progress. Here're some pics of the base I've made for the viper. I'm considering adding some flight deck equipment to it but I'm not sure. Might make it too cluttered.

More soon, anyway...

YAY.... another Viper! :)
One of these days I'll have to build one!
This one looks great, and I must concur, the base is very kewl!
;D

Hehe yeah, common as muck these vipers ::) :p

I've actually got all the decals on now and have started the weathering. Those decals were... Fun... Especially the bloomin' wing insignias that disappear when you put them over painted stripes. I'd hoped they'd have fixed that by now. Apparently not. Anyway, i'll try and get some photos taken and posted tomorrow.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Nice and clean! Steve Neill just finished two of these on his "Garage" YT channel. They really do build up sweet.

oh yeah wow thanks for that - i just saw those vids! Really great lighting in the cockpits. The lighting on mine isn't nearly so realistic but it was a first for me. I'll get some pics up in the next couple of hours.

I want a garage like his someday!

well, here are some photos of progress so far. I've done most of it now but it still needs cleaning up, weathering, and some details adding. The only real problems i've had were with the decals. The wingtip insignias are cut out of the provided stripe decals and so look a bit mis-matched. I'm not sure how to blend them in with the surrounding red short of filling in the red areas by hand with my own paint... Any ideas on this would be most appreciated...

Also had trouble with the 'beware of blast' markings on the engines - they were barely visible (same problem as the wing insignias). Luckily the generous chaps at Moebius include 4 of these decals so i used two for each engine - one layered on top of the other - which made the text dark enough to be seen.

The lights are too dim and that's my fault - didn't use appropriate resistors (actually, i didn't use them at all) so now they flicker and probably won't last very long. Ah well, you live and learn. To take advice next time.

I'll post some more pics when the weathering's all done!

Sorry some of them are a bit blurry - rubbish camera. (actually, probably just rubbish camera operator )

Thanks modelmakermike! Yeah i think I've decided that too. The engines are pretty dim too but,, you know, the viper's on the deck so it's just test firing them a bit. It's not at full thrust or anything. That's my excuse anyway - it's all... Erm... Deliberate... ::)

Thanks Grendels!

I've just bought myself some leds and resistors from ebay so now I'll be able to follow your earlier advice! I've got a simple project lined up next to experiment with lighting - the snap fit obi wan star fighter by Revell. It's prepainted but I've seen some really amazing builds of it, the best being this one:

(is it ok to post links here? If not, sorry, I'll delete it).

I'm going to repaint it and add some leds. Should be relatively simple but fun and it'll help me get better at the whole wiring thing.

Wow! Just catching up on this build, you've done fantastic work for your first lit project.

She's a beauty. Looking forward to your next build. 8)
