Hi all,

i though id leave my comfort zone to try a subject that has always grabbed my attention ever scine i saw Tora Tora Tora ! many years ago (have on dvd now ;))... that is the raid on pearl harbor. the more books i read on the raid the more im fasinated by the human story and the epic journey under taken by a carrier task force (with 6 carriers in its core !) across the worlds largest ocean to catch the US Navy and Airforce completely by surprise... a seemly impossible acheivement. So i decided to have a go trying to build one of the iconic machines of that raid........the Zero

while in my local art/hobby shop i came arcoss Airfix's new zero and new i had to have it ! ;)
i always i like to support airfix as my first model (nearly 13yrs ago) was a Airfix spitfire mk 1 LOL
And they have come a very long way in the last few months turning out some lovely little kits. there Zero is no expection ;D

cracking open the box you will find four meduim spures in grey plastic, a small decal sheet, clear spure and instuctions
P1090976.jpg

the model has some lovely engraved detail, flash free parts, only the odd injection mark here or there, but these are confined to the cockpitt

im very much so looking forward to getting stuck into this little gem of a kit

Hi Shane ,

Nice to see you having a go at the wingy things ;D You are right ,Airfix have come a long way ,their 'new' kits are little gems ,Im quietly building a collection ;D

Look forward to this one ...as always ;)

Chris.

Looks like a great little kit.

You should consider joining us over at the Navy/Marine Group build. This would fit in perfect.

- Chris , thanks for the suppoert mate, im beginning to gather a bit of collection myself ;)

- Quaralane, it is a lovely little kit and should build into a nice little replica

- Eastrock, thanks for your comment and support :)

- Jmac, sounds like a good idea indeed

Looking at the details on my phone, they look really Sharp. Should turn out great. Can't wait to see more.

cheers ron ;D

like all aircaft the build begins with cockpit which is a nice but limited detailed assembly (aftermarket parts will be out soon for it i geuss) the downer is some parts suffer from injection marks

P1100004.jpg

to add a little detail i deceided to add a cusion out of milliput on the pilots seat

Howdie gents

have been working away on this over the last few evenings and have some progress to share with yee,

been focusing on the cockpit assembly for the most part had fill a sink mark on the cockpitt floor not a big job at all

P1100005-1.jpg

the cockpitt was painted in metalic blue but i feel i should have added a touch of green to the mix but in all im very happy with the finish

P1100019.jpg

P1100015.jpg

once i sealed up the cockpitt.......and lost all that detail :(.............i fixed the canopy and masked it with liquid seal applied with a tooth pick

P1100023.jpg

now its ready to be primed and then let the painting begin ;D

from what information i gathered, and from what ive seen in perivous builds in magazines its a metalic blue/green.......i could be wrong mind you but im kinda sure its along those lines

I wasnt doubting you buddy ,I havent built one and havent done any research on them ,although I have plenty of books on them ::) ,ref stuff .Must really have a look ,I have a notion to do one sometime ...just never get round to it ,always something else to do ;D Just seemed an odd colour for the office ;)

Chris.

Very ture buddy, thought it a little odd myself but it does look kinda cool LOL ;)

After doing a little digging i found out much to my dismay that i got the interior colour wrong for my aircraft :-[ instead of being the metailic blue/green that have it as......it would appear that it is more closer to a olive green or yelow green......it would appear that the blue/ green metalic is in fact a colour of the interior but it is found in the landing gear wells

what makes it worse is the face that ive already sealed up and primed fuselarge ::)

the moral of this story is reference reference reference to advoid disaster ;)

but we'll have to soldier on

Hi all,

been busy over the weekend working on the zero's paint job, and it proved to be very trick to get a nice smooth finish with my paint brush regardless have much i thinned the paint, so a after a lot of ultra thin layers i was left was this

P1100042.jpg

P1100044.jpg

im happy enough with it, if im gonna tackle another zero in the future....i say ill try to get my hands on tami's rattle can for a ultra fine paint job

to pick out the panel lines i used at firest vallejo flat black heavly mixed with water, but it seemed to reacted very badly with the satin varnish i have the model coated in (GW rattle can)
After another near disaster i left it alone for a day....best thing to when you get fed up with a model.........and tried using shadow brown oils thinned with white spirts which worked much much better

P1100087.jpg

gonna allow it to sit for a few days before doing the underside

cheers

Like I've said before Shane ,you're very neat with the paint brush buddy , Looks good , Im guessing you removed most of that wash before you leave it sitting for a few days ?? might stain badly if you leave it on !!

thanks very much for the kind words mate, i did run into a lot of trouble with the painting of this model, a lot of sections had to be sanded clean and repainted but it gives me hope to hear others say it looks the part cheers buddy :)

as for the wash your right ive already removed all of it with a rag only the panel lines have defination now, though some areas may need a second going over

thanks for your support chris
