Anyone build the Revell 1/48 Top Gun Tomcat recently? It uses the older Monogram and Revell kit molds (in my stash), but man... the newer level 4 Revell kit is VERY rough, lots of flash and just not clean.

I just finished a Tamiya 1/48 tomcat, after doing that and a meng f18,...the revells and monograms just don't do anything for me

Agree 100%, problem for me is I vowed to go back and rebuild the models I did as a kid......so, I l'm kinda cursed and keeping putty companies in business.

I kinda feel the same but....now it's me getting the decals of the ones I loved as a kid, but the better tooling of the kits now, so the finished product I can feel good about but the memory is preserved in the (look)

HI WELL a few months ago i built the trumpy big 1/32 scale super tomcat an wow what a built an a bit of a bad fit kit but i manged to build it an its big an i lit it up with 2mm led 's an now its finished i am really pleased with it an now near finished lightin up a super hornet also as i love lightin up these kits as to me it brings them to life

So, the mold of this kit is so bad I'm thinking I might try to take it back thinking this was a QC issue with this one kit....lots of sanding on armarment on flat surfces where it looks like the plastic bubbled in the molds when being injected

I just looked up this kit on Scalemates, and TBH, I'm not surprised it's not great. It dates back to 1981, which has to mean it's nowhere near as refined as a more modern one, not to mention chances are the moulds are old and tired.

What you could do is buy a better kit and use the decals from this one on it.

That model should still be the old Monogram model for the F-14 with different decals. it is not a new mold so if you built the old Monogram F-14 Tomcat, you should know what to expect.

Working on the same F-14 myself, the jet exhaust has me a bit befuddled. Took a break from it.

Are you referring to the extra exhaust vanes for the engine nozzle....I think Monogram/Revell uses the same mold for their F-14D model that had different engines than the Marverick A model.

Yeah, just doesn't look right, I'll keep watching your build though.
You can see my progress in a thread I started.

Update to the F-14A

I'm convinced this model was defective in the box and I don't mean just a bad kit. The plastic reacts different to both Mr. cement and Tamiya thin cements. The surface sands differenty like there is an ingredient missing from the plastic compound at Revell, BUT I press on with huge gaps and loss of raised panel lines I will have to detail...
