Revell 1/48 MQ-9 Reaper UAV

First entry for the Scale Model Addict Big Spring Contest 2013 is Revell’s 1/48 MQ-9 Reaper UAV (drone). This thing is HUGE!! The wingspan is 16″!! Despite that it’s a really straight forward kit to put together. To be honest, I’m building this as part of an art installation that will go up in July. The piece will include at least a dozen drone models in various scales. The larger ones will actually have wireless surveillance cameras build into them! Anyway, here’s my first nights progress on the kit:

thanks! i was originally thinking of something like this...but i can't mask and paint that cleanly and decals might be a bit expensive for a one-liner....so we'll see.

Got a little more progress done last night. Finished up the assemblies, trimmed the pins and filled the seams. I'll probably get to the sanding over the weekend then the priming. I'm still undecided on the scheme but might still do this as a Red Bull version, just for the fun of it. Give it 10 years and we might actually see it at an airshow.

Anyway, I just got my wireless security cameras in and lo and behold they fit in the bulge AND the lens can point out in the same direction as the actual eyes!!

Primed and painted!! I decided on the Red Bull look. I first tried the underside with Testors silver blue metallic…but it was more teal so I repainted with Tamiya Pearl Blue for the underside and Tamiya Deep Metallic Blue for the topside. The prop still needs it's silver and the other details needs to be painted. I decided to order some Red Bull R/C car decals so I will probably do some creative cutting and placement….but she's wrapping up nicely! The seams did clean up nicely under the primer but my rattle can application isn't the cleanest….but this is a build more for the joke.

I love the final look! The Red Bull markings are something I was not expecting, great work! I think there is at least one finished build, but not sure how many are done yet to be honest. Good job on this!

i have the action vi, a pair of olympic carriers....a couple of jets in 1/72 + 1/48 then a surprise big build.
