Testors Dullcote question

Recently I’ve tried using Testors Dullcote (liquid) with their Universal enamel thinner using an airbrush but the finish always comes out looking a bit white. I’ve tried different ratios and different PSIs. Does it matter if I’m using acrylic paint? Thank you, Pierre

Do you mean Testor's Dullcote lacquer? If so it should probbaly be thinned with lacquer thinner, but you normally don't want to paint lacquers over acrylic because of how "hot" lacquer solvents are.

I’m using Universal enamel thinner made for Testors, so I assume it can be used with Testors Dullcote, but I am using it to cover acrylic paint. Should I be using a flat finish made to cover acrylic paints? Thank you, Pierre

Testors Dullcote is a lacquer, not an enamel. Their enamel thinner probably won't cut it at the way. Testors sells their own lacquer thinner, but hardware store lacquer thinner would also work.

I'd try thinning it with lacquer thinner and then testing it on scrap over the paint you are using and enamel or lacquer paint.

Some other possibilites are that the dullcote could be on too thick, there could be too much flattening solute in the paint, or the lacquer could be attacking the acrylic paint.

The general rule is to apply lacquers first, enamels over lacquers, and acrylics over enamels.

There are all kinds of clear paints on the market if you want to try something else, but try them on a scrap model first.

That sounds like good advice; I was probably over-looking the obvious. I’ll give the Dullcote with some lacquer thinner a try and see how it works out. Thank you, Pierre
