Here is a kitbash I'm working on...
It's a Viper-like Starship fighter made out from the leftovers of TWO Mirages 1/72 Heller. :D
Since I made a Star Destroyer from the Delta wings, I've got plenty of kit parts to work on...
With the help of some parts of a F-16 1/48, a F-18, and many various parts I made this...

The engines are, for instance made from water filters, and coffee spoons (my favorite, from every offices in the world !). It's very close to the real Viper from Galactica even if it's NOT to be accurate. It's inspirated. Not canon.

Here are some beauty shots of the kit so far. It's not done yet. The cockpit is one thing to work on later, the pilot, and the colors and decals.
I may post a WIP if you want to but i've got a LOT of pictures and a lot to explain. :D

oh yeah!
very Heavy Metal Magazine and H.R. Giger awesome styles

I've got some update but it's not a real one since didn't touch my kit for maybe a year now...

I showed you some good pictures of my Kitbash viper made from a Mirage IV A, but while checking my posts I saw that was not the actual state of my (not yet finished) kitbash.

So here we go, with pictures of course...

I worked on details and paint, didn't have the courage to resume the paint job on the pilot though... I'm really not good at painting figures.

Talking about the pilot figure here he is... It's made from an old toy, like an astronaut, the helmet kinda fit with the old fashioned colonial helmet from the original Galactica so here it is...

With no modification

Cuting through...

Roughly painted...

Adding a transparent "face" glued with white glue.

The result in the cockpit, near...

And far way. I really need to fix that paint job here... :(

I choose to paint some panels in grey, to break with the monotony of the white. I used some old paint from RAKHAM (a board gamer paint). The upper wing is put away, I hesitate on keeping the "radar" on this thing...

The bright red is from revell, it looked nice but it's too transparent. I will try with another paint, maybe citadel, or Tamiya. And I thought that maybe some harks teeth would look great on the nose there, don't you think ? The thrusters there could be the eyes, and with the shape of that ship, that could be great.

Some grey there, a little touch of red, fluorescent yellow and the panels looks more vibrant don't you think ? The black wash rise up a lot of details too.

The cockpit look better with a black wash. There's only the pilot legs, I removed only the upper part in order to tak the pictures. The screens and panels looks darker but it's okay !

I love my plastic spoons trhusters. Maybe with another final black wash coat ?

The different paints, grey, white, silver and then a black wash give a tone, a certain look to the gears, vene though I wanted some light grey and metalic touch at first. No big deal, it's great like this. Though the White Spirit may have fragilize the plastic, It kinda crack and look more fragile than ever.

The front gear is removable, that will avoid some future problem since it's a fragile little plastic piece.

You can still see a lot of details under the grills, the engines. The cables and all this stuff made the engine part "real" and fonctionnal, right ? A pity that one can only see through than at a very short distance though... :)

Odd enough, the tamiya grey color hold on much better than all the other paints. Maybe it's because the paint was not able to stay on a surface painted with a can from Prince auguste ? I have to check on that...

Thank you Quaralane :)

It could be interesting if I post the entire WIP ? What do you think ? :)
From the original parts of the Mirage IV A to the Viper form...

OK :)

Let's do it.

Just to establish a link between my Kitbash and the original parts, let's post some picture of the 1/72 Heller Model kit.

As you may know, the Mirage IV A is one heavy bomber plane made to, eventually, transport a nuclear weapon under his belly. It's huge, even in 1/72 scale.
The model kit itself, well, it's Heller all right. Poor quality, poor details, raised details mostly. That's what made it a perfect candidate for a kitbash (I don't have second thought with "bad" kits, though it's totally different with a "good" kit, since you want to preserve subtile carved details). You simply want to explore the possibilities, the main shape and geometrical forms.

Those kits I already took the delta wings to make a Tiny Star Destroyer, I named, in honor to the donor kit "Star Destroyer Mirage".

The fact is that sometime plastic parts "talk" to me... At first glance it happens that shapes and details on parts reveal themselves as a total new entity.

As a matter of fact, what appear to me as delta wing easy to transform into a gigantic spaceship, now appear to me as a potential way to build a new Kitbash Viper inspired by Galactica. I've made several of them, this one is the 14th.

Just look at it !
The wing as such, has nothing in common with a viper BUT cut the bottom delta wing in half, just cut the edge here, save the part for the future...

And VOILA !

The parts gathered (notice the different color, one kit is older, we really need TWO kits to obtain the wings of the future viper here). I really like the void in the wings. It could be the opportunity for open panels and mechanic details as in the original Viper.

Now is the fun parts of glueing it together, using big clips to assure a maximum success for that phase.

And now the general shape. I'll use the main body of the plane, back ward, and the plastic trees to obtain a "base" to glue on.

If you had ever built the orginal Viper from Galactica (Monogram model kit in my case) you'll notice that the "nose" of the Mirage look like the insert part of the cockpit. I'll have to check this before cutting more parts. And there is the profile. It's almost perfect. The parts seems just to be assemble as naturally as it could be (without instruction notice may I add...).

But for the front part of the nose, the Viper can't look that flat. I'll need to obtain a circle and for that I'll have to cut a little bit the parts.

I also need a structure that would provide a way to glue on the nose perfectly. I cut some long plastic trees and insert them on the structure made for the wings. Notice that I blend them to obtain an angle. That parts and the nose of the "carlingue" will help to assure a good fit without using to much glue. The goal is, also, not to use too much putty or sanding since it's time consuming, and money consuming too (I use Tamiya Putty, don't have any bondo or such nearby).

The nose as been cut and the shape is nearly done here.

A big clip and a plastic circle (you can find them mostly on Bandai Kits) is here to help the parts blend correctly until the glue is cured.

The rest of the parts insert easily, with some cut here and there, to the future main body. It's a relief and a big satisfaction.

I added a detail, at this oint, in the nos, a tooth paste cap, to help obtain the right circle here, and maybe have some detail later...

And now concernening the engine section. Several options here. A part of the engine of the Mirage, already glued together, the thruster parts would be nice for the right and left air entry, and one of the few "not mirage parts" added on this project, a very recognizable F-16 1/48 part.

Notice that, here, I already cut the cockpit area and that the general shape looks like a real viper.

I need to fill the engine part. I want to detail it, as far as it can be so I use a very detail part from my Super Hornet, 1/48, from Revell, the one I used for my Heavy Raider Cylon. The part is fine but I need to cut a little part to fit in.

A car race part is added to cover the bottom part...

I assure the FA-18 part a perfect fit in the engine area. I really like the look of it.

I add some F-109 motor parts (a big scale model kit, parts offered by a friend), the Super-hornet really help to support the parts and it's almost a perfect fit. The rear is empty but not for long. Detailing will be a lot of fun here ! :D

A little hesitation here. How to put the F-16 part ? Rear ? Front of the engine area ? Both solutions are good options for me. I can also add another circle section to support all that...

Two options. Two really good possibilities. What will I choose then ? Some profile picture to help me decide and an answer in the next comment of this topic. :)

front

rear

Thanks for watching the birth of that Kitbash viper. :)
Stay tune...

I really like the way this kitbash "build itself".
I think it's more "viper like" than ever, one of the finest I've built in many years. I'm happy !
And the F-16 air entry is perfect, I just have to decide how to put it...
Notice the white putty on the nose. There's not much, really don't need any polyester putty to give it the right shape, I simply don't want a gap here, and the two halves, the parts, even if they do fit perfectly, needed to be filed and then sanded...

And the good thing is that the cockpit from the Super Hornet is a perfect match with the hole I digged in the carlingue. The scale is not right (1/48 instead of 1/32) but who cares ? The pilot may be placed incomplete, or whatever...

For the engine details I used some caps with the right shape. It's a little too big, but it's alright since the glue, even cyanoacrylate, and the paint won't be efficient here. So I can just put it there and that's all.

I tried and check other caps bottle for their shape can be useful, just in case...

I put those, once painted with a "chrome spray can" and weathered in the air entry right and left, before placing some metal grills (from a plumber device...). Before and after...

I think I'll use some circular shape from plastic trees of bandai kits. Those plus some details taken from the Anakin's pod racer kit that will do the trick.

I finally cut the edge of the nose to give it a more conventionnal shape, like the Galactica's viper, and placed the compote caps in the air entry, all fit very well with the help of the plastic grill !

Those tank parts just waited to be glued there I think. :)
That will be the support for little thrusters later...

With the wires, a part taken from an old race car will complete the engine bottom area. I added some F-16 art, to make the jonction with the nose. What would have been the inside detail for the F-16 air entry is finally the perfect part here. Notice the bombe or fuel tank from a modern fighter, a classic choice for this kind of project...
That's a perfect fit, just need to fill with a bit of Tamiya putty, and add details with Anakin's pod racer parts.

Just have to work on the third engine.

This is the most valuable option since I found the perfect canopy, and this was, as usual, some hasardous search in my spare boxes. That's the X-wing canopy !

I think it's better than the canopy I cut in a cocktail verrine... Now it's useless.

The engine turbine are abandonned, but will be used later for a "Ulysses 31" project (a red shuttle).

I think I've found the right parts for the detailing on the wings... Or maybe I let the hole like this, with some wires and mechanical stuff, really don't know yet...

Some rehersal for the back engines.

A T-34, 1/48 scale, part that could be the best candidate to add some detail, cut in half ?

Stap droid parts, perfect diameter, but i've got some hesitation, the details won't be seen after glueing...

Gaz tank caps, too grey, too soft...

Finally, this tap device will be used as a main thruster, just fit perfectly in the plastic rings, that's the right diameter. The parts had spoken ! All is well. It's a perfect match and even without any details, I really like it ! I add the FA-18 part on it, that's a first phase before adding the F-16 air entry.

Just put together with a dry and empty ink cartouche, this bottle caps will be the perfect turbines for the third up engine.

I found a pilot candidate : a cosmonaute or astronaute, really don't know. A very old plastic toy figure that is ! At least 30 years old. It's a very cheap figure, the mold misalignement is pretty visible. Some cut here and there, maybe some heat source to modify the pose, and he will be ok for a tour in the cockpit viper. As you can see the porportion and scale seems perfect !

The head is horrible but the helmet just need a little help to have a "colonial" shape IMHO.

While I found the Astronaut figure, I also found some real potential in some parts. I just have to be careful "too much choices give you no choic at all" :)

Thanks Grendels...
I thought my english was good enough to translate all my inventivity but, reading it, now, I think i've done too much error in english. Not quite easy to be "informative", fortunately there is pictures ! :)

More to come... This Viper has known a lot of phases, a lot of donor kits will be revealed (F-14 1/48, Panzer, etc.). The kit parts will spoke again :) .

This phase is slower than the start.
I made a selection of parts for the weaponery, the wings, the gears, but here is the important part : the engine area. I need to detail that part and complete it first. A difficult goal !

I continued to glue on plastic circle made of plastic trees from bandai. I keep up this parts for years, I wanted to use them somehow, that is a good opportunity. That can be use as a structure to glue on other parts, and there I will use them for the inside of the engines. Since we can look through the engine is proof enough that it's logic to detail that much.

The upper engine is not glued yet, the parts fits well. I'm pleased with it.

Some kind of hesitation here. The game parts (in France known as "Puissance 4") are of the right diameter, the stap droid parts can be inserted in the engine area... Just have to make up my mind.

So far, so good. That will make the detailing easier, even stabilize the entire part or make it movable. That's a good thought since I want to show the inside area.

This picture explain why I tend to detail inside the engine area. You can see through, and this part will go without a metal grill. The bottle cap will be completed with a T-34 part, a russian tank that is from Hobby boss, 1/48 and it's a gold mine for kitbashers ! :)

I detailed the engine part, the cockpit and I'm quite happy with the result. I even do something I simply hate : use two component putty, to made the pilot helmet look like the one from Battlestar Galactica.

A beauty shot of the bird before working hard on details.
The engine before... This way you'll undestand the goal.

Let's start with the engine. I added the F-16, 1/48 scale, parts and that is a perfect match, I even did glued a car engine part, with another part of the F-16, it's full of detail and give the opportunity to put the all thing in place.
The all detail are visible if you pay attention, that's a bonus...

But we need to make all this appear as one piece of enginery. I'll gor fo detailing again... Here the T-34 part, cut in half, made possible to add details as rivets, circles, but also add stability in all this.
Around this, some T-34 tracks.

I added some plastic spoons, cut, to respect the shape obtained.

I make up my mind concerning the rear of the engine section.
I used the game "Puissance 4" pieces, it's a perfect match even though I had to find more ways to glue it. And then the water disposals, they seem to be identical but they aren't. I'll have to deal with it later.

Several shots...

The Pilot.
I had to cut the belly since he didn't found his way through the cockpit. I didn't want to build a totally new canopy so the pilot had to sacrifice his belly and his bottom.
Then I used the two component putty, an exercice I really apprehend since I don't have control on it, to add details that will make the pilot look like a Colonial Viper Pilot. I'll add a clear part in the helmet later.

OK, I'm so pleased with the engine area, that I added more details, cables and some paint... The circle in the nose part is just here because it suits this part well. Don't know if I'll let it this way.

Some view of my really messy workbench...

First of all, even though I don't like the Prince August Spray can, that was all I've got in my hands and I needed some primer on my kitbash, that will need sanding after all, so... PSSSSSCHHHHHHTTTTT...
It's all white but even me can notice that the all thing is coherent, and I like it more and more.

I hadn't added all the details needed, armament, gears panels, details on the engines, cockpit, nose etc.
Let's star with the air entry... Then the upper part, since I need a thrid little wing up there.

Finally, in the morning light, I thought "In this way it could look better".

Eventually, it will need to use more polyester putty, or other plastic parts, but make the cockpit up, and that is a good thing, and give it a more dynamic line. I like it, don't you ?

Some check list with the upper wing...

I cut some in the putty on the pilot helmet. Not a successful result. Will put this apart and continue later...
