A-Wing newb build

Ha Ha! Looks great, Matt. Really suits you.

And the stormtrooper helmet looks good too. ;D

Well it's slightly off topic but is relevant to my A-Wing build, got some practice in with the AB today.....

Sherman model undercoat using airbrush.

...have to say i think i could get addicted to using one of these. ;D Trick is just getting the paint right, thats gonna be my sticking point....that and fine control of small area painting for weathering the A-Wings panels.

OK so you guys use this stuff instead of varnish right?

My question is what PSI do you use it at, what do you thin it with and most importantly what do you clean it out of the AB with as i've no wish to destroy my AB with this stuff as it looks rather thick when its in the bottle. ::)

I don't know if it is the same formula over there in the UK, but for the stuff I use here in the states:

  • I don't thin it before I run it through the air brush
  • I run it through the air brush at about 15-20 PSI
  • I clean it out of the air brush with ammonia, that is what the label on my bottle says to use to clean it up with.

I hope this helps!

Fine work with the spray job on that tank. Looks very nice and sharp.

I've got the Pledge Multi Surface Wax, or UK Future as I like to call it. I used it a couple of times and it does a good job, but I believe there are dissimilarities between this and the American brand.

Read this for everything you need to know :- http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html

I'm not sure if it mentions the water:polish ratios, but I think it was 4 parts water to 1 part polish. If you want it more glossy, then use less water. I don't think you need to use water at all, but wouldn't recommend as it may discolour. This stuff isn't clear like the American brand.

Anway, I don't think I'll use it anymore. I used clear coats on my Maquis Raider build and was very happy with the result.

Use Windolene to clean it out of your airbrush. It contains ammonia which is great for cleaning acrylic paint also.

If you like, you can buy an ultrasonic cleaner for your airbrush. :)

Thanks Grendals and Igard for the tips about Klear/Future, have to say i'm unsure about using it but i bought it so.....

@Igard. I have to say i'm enjoying the AB so far, tried highlighting on my tank today (will post pics later in the armour thread tho), and i'm looking forwards to trying it on this project once i sort out these fibre optics and get the model together. ;D

@Igard. OK i give in whats clear coats? I tried googling it and all its finding is automotive paint....is that what you mean?

I'm not that experienced with paints. I've only ever used clear Model Master Lacquer paints. I know that Tamiya have a range, I think those are enamel.

You use a clear gloss coat over your paint before applying any decals or washes/pigments. Then you use a flat coat to seal those. Unless you want a glossy finish, you can just use another gloss or semi-gloss.

The UK future will work just fine, Matt. Try it out and see what you think. Then you can give some clear paints a try and decide which you prefer. It also smells alot nicer than paint! ;D
