Best micro (Mini) file set?

I have two sets, but cannot say either is best. I have heard that "glass" or crystal files sets are available, and of the finest quality.

I'm not sure.

I use the metal ones when a lot of material needs to be removed, and switch to sanding sticks with foam when the adjustments become minor.

I have a few metal ones but I have to say my best file is bulk bought nail files... They can flex so on and are perfect for the most part. You can also make them fit small areas. These I treat as disposables.

Looking for recommendations on the best small file(s) out there? I work on 1/700 scall ships and 1/48th scale aircraft.

Thanks

There are a great deal of cheap ones that look similar, but make sure they're an authentic NICHOLSON set and you'll not be disappointed. I've had my set so long, mine came with the little plastic file handles. I couldn't find any with the handles to show you, but these files are still the ones.

Like this, but mine came gray already on the files. Not necessary, but more comfortable than the straight shaft if you have to use them for a couple hours.

Hello,
I agree that this brand is the best. I have the same set for models, and I also have the Nicholson full-size in my shop.

Hmmm, Nichol$on, maybe one day... when I first got back into this hobby, I didn't even know they existed. I bought a lesser brand at my LHS, with still only four or five kits in the stash. Those five kits would've been the price of that $$ set of needle files. But I can't say that it wouldn't have been worth it!

I find shaped profile files especially useful when I want to shape a V grooved, or concave surface.

Well, after 10 years the stash has grown, and the cheapos (files) still in use on the bench, though supplemented with various other tools, sanding pads, sticks, and foam.

I find that just like with wood, planing and scraping are often preferable alternatives to filing. A very sharp blade or scraper dragged across a surface can yield a near-mirror finish, like when removing seams.

I work with kit plastic, resin, PE, brass and copper.

I absolutely love my set of Stedi carbon fibre sanding sticks... they offer the rigidity of a file, with very fine grit and various shapes. When the self adhesive paper wears down, replace it!

Here is a sampling of scraping, sanding and shaping tools (other than files) that have found specific uses on my bench:
