Greetings from a n00b

Hello all,

I started building models as a kid, but used way too much rubber cement and never painted anything. I'd get a model for my birthday or whatever, build it in a day and let it sit to fall apart or get tossed.

Here I am today, as a recovering alcoholic, I've begun building models as a substitution. I'd like to take this hobby and begin something I can be more proud of. In the past 10 months or so I've done 4 models with varying levels of success.

I apologize in advance for dumb questions I may have going forward but I'm enjoying this hobby so far and really want to become better at it. As of now I have some solid beginner tools, no airbrush yet (that will come with time), a number of different acrylic paints and brushes and my own small desk set up. I hope to be able to contribute to the board at some point. I'm a message board vet going back to the late 90s so I'll try not to break any rules but please go easy on me initially until I get the gist of things. I look forward to meeting and interacting with you all.

Welcome to the club!! I too am a recovering alcoholic. I have a bottle of Old Crow in my bedroom that has been here since New Year's Eve of 2019. I keep it as a reminder of where I've been and where I'm at now. Also I too have done a couple models of varying results. My vision is bad now and I have carpal tunnel syndrome and my coordination is now suffering as a result of this condition. I am getting tired of coming home - sore and tired every day! I don't have much inclination to do but I need to finish the Christmas projects that I started before I got COVID-19 last year.

Somehow the windows for a 1982 Firebird that I started to convert to a 1984 Firebird that I was building for my mother fell to the floor and I didn't see them and stepped right on them. This has been on the shelf since December and I have only touched it a few times. I also have a Sopwith Camel that I built but destroyed partially as the wing was cocked and had to be removed from a previous repair and I destroyed all the rigging and the struts for it. But this thread isn't about me - it's about you. Welcome and welcome back to the world of modeling. I too just returned to the forum after a 12 year hiatus. Drinking and playing internet games has been my life since then and I just quit playing one to come back to the real world. You are not alone in this. Thank you for joining and for your post.

glad you are here. I picked up scale models as my "stupid pandemic hobby" and I have gotten a lot out of this both in terms of community and pride of learning a new skill. I found it is not stupid at all

All of the greats were terrible(in their own eyes) kit builders in their youth!
And if you ever STOP having varying levels of success and are pumping out a 100% success rate. Quit your day job and start living on omissions

Just do your best to find your joy! Happy to see you here. And always glad to see someone keeping their

(one thing I'm just now learning after taking a break from ~12 years old to ~22 years old... and then not stepping outside of the directions box until ~30 years old... anything that you build and hate may just be what you need for a project down the road!)

And lastly no question is a bad question, unless it's being asked in an attempt to make someone feel foolish or shameful. If you are just seeking information, and remembering we're all human, questions are THE best.
