Hasbro 29" Millennium Falcon Conversion

Wow,,looks like a lot of progress so far,,,luv the resin details, they look awesome...

Thanks guys, it's tricky to get a perfect smooth finish though. How do you manage it John? Lol

At the beginning cutting out the windows and inserts I just cut everything with a sharp scalpel,....but now when removing engine deck details, I cut away as much was I can with side-snips,...then remove the rest with scalpel,....to get all surfaces flat I sanded with different grades of paper finishing with fine wet & dry,.....wet the paper to get the plastic really smooth again.

If an area like a window frame gets all messy,....the plastic looks all furry,...give it a blast of adhesion aid,.....then you can put a thin layer of super-glue on it.....and you can work with that then.....sand smooth with wet emery paper

Thank you John, I've nearly put all that into practice and it does really help mate. Ok so here's tonights update, got a nice package through the post!

And it does look good, and very different to the kit part:

Then it was time to cut out the engine grills, I used a inch and a quarter round saw bit:

And all done:

I'll be cutting out the windows of the turret and the landing gear next...

3D printed parts are fantastic. I've got a Makerbot at home. Not quite the same as the equipment that Shapeways uses. But, still handy. Looking really good.

Thanks cash! Can't put this down lol, so more cutting and drilling (my mancave looks like Santas Grotto!):

I've opted out on using the strange thin kit guns and replaced them with the more 'beefy' build your own falcon guns. I was pleasantly surprised by these, there metal, come in a number of parts and require screwing together. There to big....but I'm not going for studio accurate here as you know:

The end of the cockpit walkway has to be shortened to allow all the cockpit detail to be added:

And last the landing gear has been removed to put it in flight mode!

That is pretty awesome John.

I know it's a ways away still, but what plastic the Hasbro Falcon is made out of? I'm just wondering about getting good paint adhesion. I know a lot of toys are molded out of HDPE or PP, not much sticks to them...What's your priming/painting plan?

Jason

Hey Jason, I'm not at the primer stage yet but on Jaiteas recommendation I'll be using the Hi Cote Primer and Adhesion Aid for car bumpers. Hope that helps, if you check out his thread over on Sci Fi he mentions it there....

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm not meaning to rush you or anything. Just curious; when I was still working in industry, it was an issue for some of the molded products we made.

Jason

Yeah hopefully the primer will be ok, I test glued a resin part of Randys on the old cockpit (as that is being scrapped) and it has appeared to have stuck well using two part epoxy 5 min glue. No primer just bare resin to plastic.
Thanks Nick! Still plenty to do
