Holiday Traditions

Things have changed a lot lately, but when I was younger it was Christmas tradition for much of the wider family to gather at my parents house on Xmas day. The men & boys would get out of the way (conveniently to the local pub) while the ladies prepared the big meal, passing on their knowledge to the younger girls.

I truly miss the days when I was young and the whole family got together for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was a spectacular affair full of food, laughs and wonderful memories. Sadly those days are gone. It's just a few of us now. My wife usually has to work on the holidays so we are relegated to being at home. We do plan family Christmas in January as it's easier for everyone to get time off then. It is nice and fun but it's still only a shadow of what used to be.

We start on Thanksgiving and watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles the best Thanksgiving movie of all time. Then we watch a different Christmas movie every day up to Christmas. The day is spent just the wife and I being thankful for the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The rest of the family is scattered all over the country so it's just us. We make phone calls to our scattered family members. We do have a nice meal but nothing traditional, we don't even do Turkey on Thanksgiving being just the two of us, it's just too much so it's usually a nice steak. No tree, but a few decorations. We stopped exchanging gifts a while back, not much either of us want or need anymore. We just joined a new church so it will be nice to find out what kind of Christmas service they may have. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

As a Brit living in the US with a Korean wife, we have some expensive traditions - tins of Quality Street, Bisto and Xmas puds for a kickoff. Christmas Eve is normally Bulgoggi (Korean spicy beef or pork) sticky rice and kimchi before the onslaught of traditional roast on Christmas Day and Turkey curry on Boxing Day. A good walk in the afternoon is the norm as well.

I would love to hear about your favorite holiday traditions -

Do you open gifts up on Christmas Eve? Do you have tree decorating night? Let's share and get to know each other more.
Usually I just try and spend it with my girlfriend and my children if they can get time and gas to come see us. For the holidays I usually smoke a ham and turkey. Just enjoy time with the family.

That's about a 2 hour drive away I'm in south London, Wallington, just outside Croydon.
That's a nice area. I used to take dance lessons at the Arthur Murray Studio at the High Street Kensington address. I think they have moved to Baker Street now. I had to give it up as I would be out too late and got back to the base after midnight. The amount of sleep I got on the train on the way back didn't ever seem to be enough. It started to affect my ability to stay awake at work <chuckle>. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Are you working on a model currently? I'm working on the 1/48 F-4E Phantom II by Italeri. It's a bit of a challenge with camouflage paint scheme on the outside. (Kit No. 2770) I have to use a pencil to trace the lines of separation between the colors by following the pictures in the instructions. While I was at Mildenhall in '76 or '77, I built the 1/48 B-17G Flying Fortress by Monogram. Lots of internal color but only three on the outside, Olive Drab on top and a shade of gray on the bottom, some red on the tail area and on the main wing tips. It was the Chow Hound. It took me a while, but I sure enjoyed it. I brought it back with me on the plane and it went to my paternal grandmother in 1979.

It's in the Chit Chat category which is not a hobby specific category. But I guess someone could come up with some kind of Christmas model group build to fit the bill. :)
I sense a group build in the future!

The entire family, sometimes extended family, get together sometime around Thanksgiving and Christmas and process white-tailed deer like an assembly line.

Once, with the whole crew, took nine deer from hanging complete to ground/sliced/chopped/fileted/weighed/wrapped and packaged for the freezer in a day.
Busy!
