1:48 scale kits are getting too pricey!

Given the variety of subjects, of material used, of scales, of quality, I'm not sure we can say that there is one average cost. Your example of a fire truck kit, for example, is a relatively specialized subject, with a smaller potential market than say a Formula One racer, or a Sherman tank, or...

    Plastic Sprue Nipple Maker

Sounds like you're making more work for yourself. The alignment pins/locator pins do help line up the parts, but they're not really necessary. That is, we can assemble the parts without the pins, just need to take care when lining up the parts.

    paint

Yes, 91% solution, actually, from the drugstore. Trust me, for me, Tamiya's own thinner works best, for thinning the paint. Isopropyl does work well for cleaning the brushes, though, removing the residue that can accumulate in the ferrule. I also blow it through the airbrush after shooting...

1:48 scale kits are getting too pricey!

There are a number of things to consider, when we talk about the price of model kits, especially if we compare prices to where they were when we were kids-that can be 40, 50, 60 years in the past for many of us. General inflation over time, for one. The price of petroleum, which is used to make...

    Plastic Sprue Nipple Maker

All kidding about nipples aside, I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean the little pins that are molded on parts, that fit into a hole in another part? Locator or locating pins, they're often called. Some short-run kits, styrene or resin, might not have them.

Yeah, for me, it's called being Dutchy - Pennsylvania Dutch. We're known for being cheap, er, ah, thrifty, too. But I learned that sometimes you can be too cheap for your own good. For example, when I started thinking about thinning the Tamiya acrylics, I saw what a bottle of Tamiya's acrylic...

Nice pun! @fatz, if I could offer you a couple of general tips, I use acrylics, both water-based and solvent-based, on my styrene models, but also on various resin kits, and white metal. Some of these have been mentioned already in the discussion: I usually clean parts in warm water with a...

    Broken bottle

That's a plastic eyedropper bottle, right? If it is, it's not too unusual for the tip to crack or break. Vallejo is known for having that problem, where a batch of bottles will have tips that tend to crack or break. Sometimes, and if yours is a new bottle, I don't expect it's the case, but if...

    Painting raised lettering

Dry-brushing is a technique where you dip your brush in paint, then you draw it across a piece of paper towel, or some other material, to remove as much of the paint as possible, leaving just a small amount. Then you drag the brush over the surface, just enough to hit the raised relief, in this...

I use what is essentially a dry-brushing technique for things like that.

Hi fellow hobbyists! Has anyone tried the Medusa Clash of the Titans model kit being shipped from Taiwan?

Maybe it is you who should read up on copyright laws. Are you an attorney? Buying another company's molds and the rights that come with the transfer of ownership are not the same thing as pirating another maker's intellectual property. Piracy is a major problem in the figure world...

Hi fellow hobbyists! Has anyone tried the Medusa Clash of the Titans model kit being shipped from Taiwan?

Welcome to the Herd! As far as recasts go, I avoid them, because recasts are generally unauthorized copies and the original sculptor gets nothing from the sale.

Welcome to the Herd! Do you build models yourself, too? It would be a nice tribute to your pal to build one or two or even more, in his memory. Best regards, Brad
