1/35 X-wing - Forced perspective Diorama

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Looks like that should be just about the perfect size, Scott. Nice idea

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Close enough to me eh? I did LOL at the idea of a German X-Wing.

If one wanted to be picky it looks like the X-Wing is more 1/32 next to the 1/35 figs (judging by the cockpit size, those things were cramped) but this will work just fine.

If you wanted to cut down on the depth of the shelf idea you could just lose the two wings that would be in the back but wutevs, I'm sure you will make this work.

I'm just thrilled to see you building at such a steady pace. ;D

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Thanks dooders. Yeah, I think it's closer to 1/32 too, but not many good figures to choose from - if any really - and this will definitely need figgies.

Steady pace - kitchen table helps that be a reality.

Started framing up the shuttle. From what I gather it hovers...

Thanks for watching. As always - if you see something that looks off let me know.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Ken, had to post a pic.

Here's the kit's pilot with the Tamiya German seated eating bread dude.

Yeah, the kit is more 32 than 35 but what's a poor boy to do?

I've searched high and low for both 32 and 35 figs and the best I've found was 1/35. The star wars crew dudes are wearing grey overalls: Mechanics simply don't have helmets.

There are only a few decent military figure kits to work with. They are all 35. Namely:

Don't spend another moment on it, I was just sayin'

If you need 1/35 figures man, I have tons of plastic ones that I won't use. I usually toss the ones that come in kits aside and buy one or two resin dudes for my vignettes. I could always send you a bunch of sprues and you can just cobble them together to make stuff work.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

True. Just my OCD flaring up.

Yeah - thank you. So far I have order the Tamiya kit from ECH. I need more but the only source for the other kit above is overseas and I have yet to order.

If you have some men in overalls you know where I'm at. If not, if you can get that miniart kit locally and some heads without helmets - I'll paypal you some dough for em.

Those first two pics are awesome! I like the perspective of looking slightly up at it. Ever consider doing this dio as a wall hanger Scott? Sort of a shelf type deal hung on the wall? The perspective from eye level or slightly above eye level is just killer! Great work on this one.

What about a shadow box ala Shep Paine?

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Actually I have another build in mind for one of those.

Note the edit in post above. Didn't mean to but pressed modify instead of reply. My bad.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Boxed in the driver area just now.

Back to work...

In case you have no clue as to what I'm modeling here, this is the rig:

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Scott....if you really want that Brit. Tank Crew, I do have an unused one in my stash I can sell you. I won't be needing it before I end up doing another order for Miniart stuff (don't know why I didn't think of it before).

If you want it, let me know, I will put it aside and send it with the Tamiya set when it arrives (about mid July). Set is $11.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Sounds good to me. Thanks. I'll need some heads without hats though.

Put another 3 hours into this puppy.

First I made the lower sides using strip and a thin styrene backing:

Then using the thinnest stock I have I added the rounded walls. I first rolled them to get a start on the curve and glued. Lots of sanding later this is what I have:

Next up is the top deck which has a bit of a lip extending over this 'tight' deck.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Cool.

I'm curious to know what has gotten into you though. ;D

Excellent scratch building Scott. Do you use "the chopper" for cutting your strip to length?

I'm curious to know this too. Actually, I don't know what the 'chopper' is. ;D

I've been practicing cutting bits of styrene with a guillotine type device and also using my hobby knife, but not got results anywhere near as clean as those. Still new at this, of course, but I'm making little progress.

Methinks I need a shiny new tool.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Gotten into me...just the fact that I brought a small toolkit and a big cutting mat downstairs. This way Denise surfs the web and I sit at the opposite end and build. No muss no fuss.

Chopper...no wish I had one. Feel free to buy me one if you like. :)

Here's a link to it. http://www.nwsl.com/tools/cutting-tools-the-choppers-i-ii-iii

What I"m learning is that going s....l....o....w is the key. Slow shallow cuts, slow watchful sanding. Relax, slow down. Instantly better results. This is a hobby after all. We are supposed to relieve stress while doing this.

I am a total gear slut for sure, but truth be told - it is better to use what you have first rather than run out and buy a new tool. Preachy, I know - but it is true. If I can do this anyone can.

I rough cut the lengths with a large chisel blade in the zacto. Then I glued the longer strip onto the thin styrene. I glued one smaller strip, making sure to place the longer end of the not-so-square cuts face up. This way there wasn't much of a gap long the top. Follow me so far? I used one piece as a spacer but eventually just eyeballed it.

So then I was left with a hair comb of sorts. All the strips were longer that needed. I turned the piece over, again with the chisel blade, cut to length.

Once I place the 'combs' on the shuttle, the angle of that wall made then again long. I just took a full sheet of 200 grit sandpaper and sanded the entire piece in a circle, holding it down firm. Once I saw lots of dust on the sheet I knew I had reached the belly plate and therefore all the combs were flush.

I still have a bit of putty work on a few of the corners, but all in all it's good. Not perfectly square, but good.

Re: 1/35 X-wing

Thanks for the sage advice, Scott and for all the info. :)

The guillotine I bought back when I was starting out isn't too dissimilar to that chopper, albeit not as expensive looking. I do enjoy working with the hobby knife alot more though.
