2012 BSC - Questions

Although a "database" sounds like a good idea for contestants, I have to say Scott makes a very valid point.

I find that one's best bet is just to work as hard as they can on their entry and hope for the best! It's what we do at track practice - we never know the workout, so we just plug our hardest efforts till the end ;D

Ok ok. I was typing, you were typing, I didn't read & just hit "post" - my bad. ::)

I totally can see your point Scott. I guess it just makes everthing a little more suspenseful.

Counting I will go...

I certainly don't want to be a jerk and not post stats (I don't even know them myself, I haven't sorted anything out), but this is a contest, a competition.
If you had the knowledge that there was a better chance to place in a certain category, well I find that to be a bit anti-contest, if you know what I mean.

Without knowing the stats, you have to bring your A game...and that will help everyone to grow.

I'm assuming you guys aren't as concerned with "who" as you are with "how many". As you say Jmac, a simple column of category with a number beside it would be a nice feature. (Although, nice feature always equals more work for Scott!!). Even with land based, a person can swivel their head and get an idea of number in each category. Either way, the more entrants the better I figure. I saw yesterday where we topped a hundred! That's pretty sweet!

True, but you can't then run home and build one to enter a sparse category.

There won't be stats posted until final entries are in.

There are currently a total of 118. I can easily see that number. As for specific categories, I have no idea.

Here is one thing that some of you are not thinking about. With a land based contest, you won't know who or how many are in each category until the time of the contest.

Since this is an internet contest, things are a bit different, and everyone has to enter earlier. Because of this some of you are trying to figure out if there is an advantage to certain categories. This is something you cannot do in a land based contest.

Instead of worrying about the number of entries in each category, how about worrying about who is entered in each category. I think that is a bit more important. There are some excellent builders in this contest and they will be tough to beat. Each category has it's specialist.

My advice is to stop worrying about the numbers and get building. You will need your A-game no matter what.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. (light bulb goes on) I see the concern.

Scott, just to play the devil’s advocate...

Oh, how I love doing that... :) Must be a legacy from my days at uni - nothing better than to get a chance to try to pick your best buddy’s argument apart, bit by bit, by constructing the weirdest and furthest out worst-case scenarios you could think of. Man, sometimes I truly miss those days...

Anyway, enough with the rambling â€" on with the arguments...

If this was a land-based contest then you wouldn’t get day-by-day WIP images of the builds.

I can certainly see the wisdom in not wanting to disclose the numbers (seriously guys, are you so set on winning that you will pick category based on number and quality of contestants and not what you want to build?) but then what about those who post pictures vs. those who don’t?
If knowing the numbers is considered an advantage, then surely seeing your “opponents” WIP pictures is an even bigger advantage.

So, if no numbers are shown, then I would suggest that we must all post WIP pictures. Fair’s fair, right...?

Grendels, that was exactly why I suggested that the contest was split into noob and veteran categories. I enter into the contest knowing full well that if I pick a category that one or more of the “experts” has picked then I won’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of placing in the top-three of the category. Not that I had much chance anyway, but that's down to my noobness...
So in the end I simply decided to build what I had in the house and what I wanted to build. But still... It seems that, for some, this is still a concern. A shame that we couldn’t solve that, really...

Full disclosure: I’m personally intensely curious as to the numbers of builds, their nature and the category distribution. But that’s just me â€" the geeky geek who loves to look at graphs, stats, and numbers...
I’m particularly interested in the armour vs. aircraft and WWII vs. modern trends. But... Ah, well... I’ll just have to wait until the contest is over, won’t I...?

The WIP are optional, just like emailing pics to your buddies before a land based show. Might help you, might not.

There will not be stats posted. That's that.

well its a battle for first, Right Scott?! :)

do your best and have fun!!! Quote from a friend "we need to also watch out because his a very tough one to beat in his comfort zone" lol

John is right is not about the numbers is about who you are against with and also watch out with the man with a orange squid... right? ;D

My only concern is follow the ground rules, SMA staff imposed. ;)

I don't know if you need to watch out for little old me....

But it is a contest. All contest have winners and losers. It is up to you to decide which one you want to be.

And this is how I look at it:

Two years ago, I made my first entry in to the contest, it was my second model to build up after a 15 year break in model building. It did far better than I expected it to.

I took a look at those that were better than me and decided that I wanted to build like they do. So I started working on techniques. My goal is to beat those who usually win. It is what drives me forward.

I don't need the prizes that this contest offers, I just want to be able to say I won.

Those that follow my builds will know that I do not pick the easiest kits to build, this is how you gain experience. So when I do get that easy kit, look out! It will be done is record time.

So sit back enjoy your build and stop worrying about if you are good or not. Too much worry will show in the build. Stress will bring mistakes. Sit back , relax and do the best you can.

There are so many prizes in this contest that there is a chance that you can win one. I know that the prizes I am offering up will not go to first, second or third place.

That's what I've been doing. Googling specific people, reading their blogs, WIP threads etc... There's a TON of info to learn from.

That's what I call ...Hitting the nail on the head. ;). Do more building folks ....less worrying :)

Chris.

[sarcasm]I know I'm not worried mate, I entered three models in every category.

Ima' sweep this whole thing this year. ;)[/sarcasm]

I don't feel I can take alot of pride winning a category where there are only a couple other entries. Alot harder to beat say ten other builds.

Here is something that may come off strange. I picked a couple of builds I thought I'd like to do and I'm going to build them the best I can. I know, I know, I must be a moron. ;D

Seriously, before this conversation keeps going, by entering the contest you get to support SMA, Djenise, get a free paint set and you might even have fun. Yay we are all winners!!!! ;D ;D ;) ;D

And by the way, some of you may be surprised at how far you can get with a little confidence and determination. Take yer time and build smart.

we need sarcasm tags for Ken.

the way i see it is if you are worried you ar not going to win then your not trying hard enough to try and win, now i know we all say ive no hope but john when i saw your vid on the dio your planing i cringed a bit because i know if you pull it off it will be hard to beat :)

so Ferker ya ;D but its all about the fun, im having a blast doing mine at the moment and ive learnt a few things so this is what i call winning.
