Enterprise D - from "Generations"

Excuse me for being the dolt in the group but how wide is that roll of masking tape your using? Or are you just laying strips across your cutting mat giving us the unintentional illusion of poster board size tape?

I'm laying strips of 40mm Tamiya tape, poster sized masking tape would be handy though!! :p

Are you drawing those lines with a lilac pencil with a fluffy pink ball on the end? I'm worried about you. ;D

Soong, this is great work. And I'd also like to know if it's possible to get masking tape that wide!

Haha! Oops, forgot to get that out of frame ::) Cant be bothered to dig around for another pencil so i'm using my fiancees...! As cool as that would be, I think 12" wide tape would be a massive pain to use without wrinkling up on you :-\

Yes, it certainly is impressive.
How long did it take you to make the masks?

It took a few hours to draw out and map the main pattern, and quite a few days to cut out, sub-divide and lay out the individual masks onto the hull. I'll end up doing 3 laps of masking for the 4 colours and then a couple of laps for touch-up's and window removal (which I'm actually really looking forward to!)

Cheers for the comments guys

Okey dokey then time for an update, quite a few pics to show as well. I'm about halfway through “Aztec Hell” now, took a while to get caught up on the saucer but i'm getting there now. Here's the top and bottom of the saucer with the first stage masking

And again with the second, “accent” stage masking

Weeks of work condensed to 4 pictures....!
Anyway, just a few loose ends on the secondary hull and dorsal section to sort out and then the whole thing will be turning a couple of shades of blue! I did a quick paint test to see how the blues I've mixed will look with the tan/grey layers, the darker “tan” colour won't be this dark on the finished model (I didnt mix the bottle properly before spraying!)
Here's a step-by-step

Wow..
I'm pretty sure I would have gone running from the bench like a madman already if faced with this daunting task at hand.

Kudos and keep up the awesome job.

Soong, my old friend....
You must have the patience of Job..... a Guy from the Bible.
Insanely incredible work there.
;D

She is going to look really nice when done. No decal will replicate that.

Thanks Grendels, that's the hope anyway. I've got absolutely nothing against wallpaper decals but I prefer the look of a painted surface, and this way I know that there's no other "D" out there that looks exactly like mine (that sounds pretentious, it's not meant that way haha!)

Crikey.
Now, I'm remembering why I use decals.

Me and decals don't play nicely together, tried a couple of times with those on a 1/1000 Refit and some panels on an Excelsior. I just cant get them to a point where I'm happy with them, there's a definate skill to applying decals...I don't have it haha! ::)

I have a couple of times, I even stopped working on it for a while to build a Bat-Pod and re-build an '89 Batmobile...it keeps calling me back though!!

Those blues are perfect. What colors are you using?

Custom mixes of Revell acrylic white and blue, guestimated to match the colours in the Christies photo's. My tip...add TINY drops of blue to pure white rather than loads of white to tone the blue down

Cheers everyone, be back with more soon...she's turning blue as we speak... 8)

I'm about to pick up this same kit and start it. Now.... I am questioning attempting it! Lol great work all around. Extremely impressive. You are totally fullblasting that thing.

Re: Enterprise D - from "Generations" SAUCER AZTECS COMPLETE!!!

I can't tell you how glad I am to finish this stage on the saucer, I'm getting serious “aztec burn” from this build!! But before we get to that here's a few pics of the secondary hull, ready for the first blue coat

And here's the saucer section going through the last few stages of aztecing. Sprayed light blue with the 3rd and final masking layer, dark blue applied then all masking removed...

There's a fair amount of touch up work needed, the area around the captains yaught needs to be done and then it'll all be very lightly misted over with a light blue/grey to pull the tones together a bit. Then I can pull the window masks off and see if she looks any good lit up!!

Until next time, here's some more pics of the completed aztecs

Geez...I would have lost even more hair working on this one.
On a side note, I worked on one of these back in the nineties and hand painted the aztec pattern, I remember it took plenty of hours to get that done as well.
Great job on the paint!

That is a serious act of patience right there. Looks great though! Major challenge too, but well done pushing on through.
