Honda!

Just found this thread! Looks nice Grendels. Will be interesting to see which way you go with the dirt.

Looking good John! I still think these are good looking cars. Hard to beat the reliability of a Honda. Change the timing belt when due and keep on driv'n.

The Lil' Honda is coming on nice John . Engine is looking great :)

Chris.

Looks great John! Love the fine detailing on the valve cover. I can tell by the tight zoom that it probably looks perfect to the naked eye. Tamiya really nailed it with the all the parts. Excellent work getting the proper colors on the plastic canisters as well.

Looking good so far... you may want to paint the top of the oil filter black thou to make it look more Fram-ish! :)

To the naked eye it looks perfect. I have also touched it up a tiny bit...

Maybe, but I really don't think anyone is going to see it anyway.

As promised, here are a few photos:

It is a bit blurry, but you can see the oil work on the bottom

IMG_1186.jpg

A better shot of the grunge work I have done. The wife was not happy she thought it should have stayed clean, but it is a 14 year old car, no way that engine is factory fresh

IMG_1187.jpg

Here you can see some of it from the front.

And the back

IMG_1189.jpg

This time from the top.

And that oil filter with some grunge on it. You can also see that I have toned down the black on the air filter quite a bit.

IMG_1196.jpg

Radiator fan, there is a shroud that goes over this, so you really won't see the paint mistakes but I might fix them anyway.

IMG_1198.jpg

And that is the windshield washer bottle. Took me a bit to figure out how to get it to look like I see in my truck. Needs to be dirtied up a bit.

This is the hood, do any of you think that will polish out? Or should I strip the paint and start over?

Engine's looking really good.
As far as the hood goes, you should probably try again. I'm not sure if it will polish out

Looks great Big J... love the weathering on the engine. As far as the hood goes, it looks like the paint went on a little thick. Try thinning it out a bit and doing another coat to get rid of the orange skin peel look. If it don't come out, use some Easy Off to remove all the paint and try again. But when it's dry and cured, use some Turtle Wax Buffing Compound or the Maquires Soap Shine kit for automotive detailing to bring out the showroom shine of the final finish.

Wow that engine is really detailed!

Yeah it is, far more than your normal car model. Every little part is there....

I didn't try to polish it out, instead I took the sand paper to it and sanding sticks. I smoothed out the paint and did it again. I got the car body right, but not the hood. I think I know what went wrong and will correct it. It was how I was mixing the paint. They would not have shown up with flat paint but only with gloss, which I have never run through the AB before.

Well in that case you can always use a flat paint of the same color and then just use a Future coat over it. That might solve the problem. The only difference between a Gloss and a Flat paint believe it or not is corn starch! :) You can always make a gloss paint flat or "satin" by grinding up some corn starch into a fine powder and mixing it into the paint. It will come out flat! :)

nice work man I love hondas im on my 4th one now real car that is and yes there are tons of small parts for it
just cant wait to see this kit when your done looks like its going to be a good year

Yes, Jonh, I forgot to mention how great that bottle looks!
Great job on the engine as well.
I think I might need to catch up on some of your build vids.

I am using primarily Tamiya paints for this, and they make a product called flat base. It is to be used with their paints to take a glossy paint and turn it flat. I will have a few segments on this in an upcoming video on the Honda. It works great when mixed in with future. You can get some really interesting effects with this stuff.

Thanks, it took a bit to figure out. But I got it, flat white base coat, clear blue mixed with yellow over that, and then a really thinned down mixture of a tan mixed with white over the top to make it transparent looking. It took three tries to get it right.

Thanks! I have been posting the vids quite often lately. Making good progress on both this and the Mercury 9. That one is close to done.

That engine looks as complicated as my 2012 real civic engine.
Always difficult to get the balance right in weathering non military stuff without overdoing it, but you've nailed it mate.

Nice stuff 'G-man'
