Desslok's Command Cruiser....

Interesting discussion there.

I've used milliput! I used it on my USS Spitfire defiant. I just found it a bit difficult to work with. Hard to shape and hard to sand. But it was pretty much the first seam filling method I used so perhaps with some practice, I'd get it down. The results were quite good though, but I switched to squadron since I found that easier to apply. The Magic sculp I'm using now (similar to Aves) is much better than Milliput and Squadron IMHO.

Think I'll pick up some of that Bondo putty. It looks like a quick and easy seam filler with little fuss. Though I'll wait until after your conclusion vid before I decide for certain. ;)

One cool thing about silver paint other than it is great to show hull's surface print is that when it is old enough and you don't use to much thinner it has great consistence for getting into microholes and destroy them. To victories at once :)
Another great video here, John! Your lessons are amust-see for a beginning modeler, definitely.

He did make some good points........in the end you use
the different fillers where they work best.....considering
their up-sides and down sides as you decide.
I will say this about Aves Apoxie Sculpt, I use it a lot and
it's not a filler putty although it can be used that way. It's
really a tooling medium great for making patterns or sculpts.
I prefer flat colors for showing sins like grey primers...even
flat black works well.

Great videos Grendels but you said you will talk about Mr. Dissolved putty and I didn't see it.
Did I missed it or did you decide to leave this one out?

I haven't gotten hold of it yet. :'(

My local hobby shop has it on back order.....I don't want to leave it out, just can't get it.

Thank you all, I will have the conclusion up soon.

Jamicanmodels: You are correct, different putty's for different things. Aves has its use as a putty. For my resin build, I used it quite a bit. It has some really nasty seams to fill. And I do mean fill! Some of them were an 1/8 inch wide. I also had to basically reconstruct the shape of the ship. So in essence I was sculpting those seams filled.

But for this build, it was getting in the way. So I quit trying to use it and went with a different method. I still have a few spots to fix where I used the Aves.....

Most of the seams are done, just a few touch ups and she can be put together. Then paint!!! I have a new airbrush to try out. A Sotar 2020

Sure just wanted to make sure. So when you get hold and if you won't be satisfied with it let me know I know a little secret that improves this putty ;)

Will do!!

Grendels, Im really looking forward to the finished cruiser. Hadnt seen them before. I really want to see the result... Bavarian Construction Yard standing by... ;D

Life is very much in the way right now. I promised to make a lighting tutorial for the MF group build, and I have been working on that this week instead of model building. I have three of the five videos done.

On top of that, work is taking priority this week. I am putting in an extra 3 hours each day. That stops today and my schedule will be something like normal for a bit.

Excellent stuff, Grendels. Things are much clearer now. I'm going to start budgeting more carfully since I've spent far too much money on this hobby these last 6 months.

It looks like all I'll need now is some Mr Surfacer. Then I should be good for a while.

Thanks for making these vids. Very helpful indeed. :)

You've been most helpful and inspiring to me, G. You and Scott G. are the reason I got back into scale modelling again!!
The putty conclusion vid has sealed the deal for my putty needs, IMHO... mostly. I'm still gonna check out the mr. liquid putty or whatever it's called from Gunn-Sangudo, or whatever they're called. Got a hard to sand seam that might just fit the bill for some paintable & "thinnable" putty, if that's a word.
I know it's not cuz I looked it up
It's one of those skills I learned when I was in school

Guess the band!

I did get some Mr. Dissolved putty this week and will put up a review video this weekend. I am still not sure which one I like better, Mr. dissolved putty or Mr. Surfacer. The dissolved putty is a strange beast!

Great video
I have got to try AVES cause other stuff is just not working

The other stuff can be hard to work with, but also so can Aves. Just make sure you practice on something first. Not your model. Just to get the feel for it and get it down. But once you do, you can fill a seam with little or no sanding.

The problem is if you make a mistake, it is as hard if not harder than the plastic and great care must be taken when you sand down the aves.

Good stuff G ......... thanks for doing that,
check this link and look at their other products
as well this is closer to a putty....they call it Apoxie
paste.

I will have to give it a try, it says that it is self leveling. That sounds great for a few bad seams I have come across....

I will have that review of Mr. Dissolved putty up this weekend!

I have no idea who the band is, but I could cheat and use google....

If the tamiya issue is ever sorted out over there ild like to see/hear you taughts on the basic putty.

Going by my LHS today, I will see if I can get some.

I'm using the Tamiya basic putty right now to fill a couple holes on my group build project, and it seems to be working fine. It starts to set up pretty quickly, right out of the tube. I squeeze some on a spare bit of cardboard and the outer surface of the putty starts to set up almost immediately, so you need to work pretty quickly with it. It thins with lacquer thinner.
In small applications, it's ready to sand within a half hour. So far, I've been applying it and letting it set overnight just to be sure. The instructions from Tamiya don't give any indication as to how long it needs to cure for, though.
Harder or softer than plastic? How do I tell? It seems to sand the same as plastic, to me at least. Then again, i've just returned to the hobby, and my experiences with filling gaps in the far past have been pretty hilarious/horrible. I remember building an AMT/Ertl TNG Romulan Bird of Prey, and having enormous gaps in the fit of the nose section to the dual wing section via the dual neck pieces. I used the only gap filler I could find at the local hobby shop, Testors putty. Hmmm... funny how nobody has brought up how that stuff performs... ;)

BTW, I'm gonna try the Bondo glazing putty as a filler, thanks to Grendel's latest putty evaluation vid. Or second-to-latest, if you've uploaded your liquid putty vid already!
