Time for the results of a busy week in the workshop (well, mostly 'weekend' )
The fan mounts have been cast up from Alumalite.
I broke several getting them out of the mold, but was able to get the ones I needed
Cut the blades into the fan disks.
To ease warping of the plastic, I cut out one segment from each blank, leaving 15 blades per fan.
With the thickness of the 1mm plastic, the blades got angled without much effort from me.
Completed fans mounted in the lower side of the hull.
I also used some styrene pieces to simulate cargo doors, loading hatches, and the doors for the emergency landing gear
Closeup of the underside of Fan 4 in place
The upper fan mounts in position.
Temporarily placed the deck island in position to get an idea of the look
WE HAVE PRIMER!
Gave the entire hull a coat of Krylon primer from rattle can.
Gave the lower hull a coat of Vallejo grey primer via my airbrush.
The main thrusters were painted in with Graphit Dust
Upper hull and island were given a coat of the same color, except for the flight deck, which was left in the darker grey of the primer.
Using electrical tape and .5mm styrene, I created the blast deflectors for the catapults at the front of the ship.
With main color in place, I pulled out what will become Columbia's air wing.
With the exception of Changewind One, which came from the original model, the planes were all purchased from Shapeways
11 XF-23 Black Widows, and a 'special guest.'
The 'guest' is SHIELD 616, or Phil Coulson's "Bus" from Marvel's "Agents of SHIELD."
It was made using a 1/700 C-17 Globemaster, and the wings ends from a second C-17 as a proof of concept for a larger model
Four of Omega 7's "quinjets."
These were made from 1/700 B-2 stealth bombers.
I trimmed the ends of the wings off, and used them to make the rudders I put on for added stability
Finally, a group of 12 F-35b Lightning II fighters flanking Changewind One
