A-Wing newb build

I'm an install the lights, then mask, then paint sort of guy myself. Liquid masking fluid is an excellent choice for masking lights or other small details.

I am glad to hear that the LED is a native blinker. This means that the batteries won't drain fast.

The only trouble I have had with PVA and fiber is the time required for the glue to set up. It can be a pain to hold the fibers in place while a long curing glue sets up.

Also, if you handle the fibers in a rough way, yes they will pull out. (I do mean rough, like tugging on them hard.) But if you are gentle with them, they will stay in place.

With epoxy, you can handle them any way you want.

If you leave enough of the fiber sticking out, then you don't have to mask it. Just trim it flush when you are done painting. Also, if it is possible, apply a bit of heat to the end of the fiber after trimming. That will round over the end and it will look more like a button. Most fiber will melt at a temperature lower than styrene so you don't have to worry about melting the cockpit, but watch it carefully. It doesn't take much heat to melt the fiber.

Another quick update, been a busy little day today.

Finished scribing the centre of the top hull and was about to start scribing the sides when i decided to check the fit of the hulls, glad i did because i noticed that the panel lines for the top and bottom of the body dont line up at all.
I was going to follow my system of sanding and rescribing following the old lines, if i had then the two halfs would have looked totally wrong, now i need to replan all the panel lines from scratch which i dont expect to be too much hassle tbh.

I got my new weapon of choice today, a Dremel drill, and decided to put it straight to work. I've never had one before but boy are they dead handy!! lol
First on the hit list was sanding away the inlaid panels where the concussion missile bay is going to be. I then cut and sanded my 'new' concussion missile launchers from some brass tube......

IMG_1026.jpg

The plan is to fit them in the recessed panel and replace the rest of the panel from plasti card thats been shaped to fit.....so far i'm happy with the look and i'm toying with the idea to link the fiber optics from the cockpit to the launchers too....lets call it the fire control system for the missiles. ;)

Well i feel the call of the Dremel so i must fly.....happy modelling all.

That's coming along nicely. Those new launchers will be a major improvement.

Nice progress on her, fubar!
And congrats with getting a Dremel - one of the most handiest tools on my bench as well.
Keep it up, budy, You are doing great! :)

Great progress, Matt.

Dremel's on my to-get list, but has been for a while. I need to take the plunge.

Thanks guys it's slow going but fun, surprising how much new stuff i'm learning on this build!! I'm about to enter the marvelous world of putty for the first time.....wish me luck. ;D

@NecronautDrummer

What a great idea......heres a dry run with two launch tubes, i did try three but that looked too OTT. I think less is more in this case, two seems just right i think. :)

@ Igard
Yeah i'm very impressed with the Dremel so far, worth every penny i'd say. Just make sure if you get one it has the variable speed controls, thats a really useful feature when working with so many different materials.

A Dremel is an indispensable modeling tool in my opinion. One of the best accesories I've picked up for mine is this snazzy rig that turns it into a mini drill press.

Two definitely look good in that pocket, Fubar.
And my Dremel Stylus is the most used tool on the bench after my sprue cutters

Woot finally got all the panel lines rescribed on top and botton hulls.....i'm quite happy with them considering their my first effort at scribing lol

My airbrush arrived today, i may ask you guys for tips as i've never used one before and dont wanna ruin the model after all this hard work. lol

I'm still quite a ways from painting yet but i like to plan ahead. lol

Surgery today on the pilot, so nice to be doing something other than panel lines, cut off and repinned his legs and arms for a seated position. May need to lower his seat as his big bonce only just fits in the cockpit. ::)

Question: I want to mount the model on some brass tube so i can pass cables down it, is it possible to put an angle into brass tube so the model has a more dynamic angle on the base? I tried putting in a bend using a vice and brute strength.....not a good result. ;D
